The best Islands of Adventure tips come down to three things: get to Hogsmeade early, pack light for the big coasters, and know which rides Universal Express doesn’t cover. Universal Islands of Adventure is the park with Hagrid’s, Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster and Hogwarts castle, and it’s also where Universal’s tallest height requirements are.
This guide is for a first visit. It covers how the eight lands fit together, a rope drop plan with and without Early Park Admission, how Express, Single Rider and Child Swap work here, where lockers are free, and which rides are closing for maintenance between now and February 2027.
Everything below comes from Universal Orlando’s own pages and Rider’s Guide, checked on October 9, 2026. Hours and closures change often, so check the Universal Orlando Resort app the night before.
Quick answer: If you stay at a Universal hotel, use Early Park Admission to ride Hagrid’s first, because it has no Express line, then VelociCoaster and Forbidden Journey. Without early entry, start with Hulk and Spider-Man near the entrance or join the Hagrid’s line right at opening. Leave phones and loose items in the free ride lockers at the big coasters, and plan around closures: Jurassic Park River Adventure reopens December 17, 2026.

Islands of Adventure at a glance: the eight lands
Universal describes the park as “1 Park. 8 Lands.” You enter at Port of Entry, and the other seven lands sit in a loop around a central lagoon, so you can walk the whole park in a circle and end up back at the gates.

| Land | Headliners | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Port of Entry | Shops, bakery, lockers | Entry and exit |
| Marvel Super Hero Island | Hulk, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom’s Fearfall | Thrill seekers |
| Toon Lagoon | Ripsaw Falls, Bilge-Rat Barges | Getting soaked |
| Skull Island | Reign of Kong | Brave kids and up |
| Jurassic Park | VelociCoaster, River Adventure, Pteranodon Flyers | Coasters and dinosaurs |
| Hogsmeade | Hagrid’s, Forbidden Journey, Hippogriff | Harry Potter fans |
| The Lost Continent | Mythos Restaurant | A sit-down lunch |
| Seuss Landing | The Cat in the Hat, Caro-Seuss-el | Young children |
Heights for every ride are in our Universal Orlando height requirements guide. The short version for this park: The Incredible Hulk Coaster needs 54 inches, Doctor Doom’s Fearfall 52, VelociCoaster 51, and Hagrid’s and Forbidden Journey 48. Seuss Landing has rides with no minimum at all.

Hours often differ between the two original parks. On October 9, 2026, for example, Universal’s calendar showed Islands of Adventure open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with Early Park Admission from 8 a.m., while Universal Studios Florida ran 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no early entry. Check the hours for your own dates.
Islands of Adventure tips for rope drop and Early Park Admission
Early Park Admission lets Universal hotel guests (and other select groups whose park ticket states the benefit) into select attractions up to an hour before the park opens. You still need a valid ticket for the park. Universal’s page currently lists Islands of Adventure for October 5 to November 30, 2026, with four participating rides plus the Ollivanders wand shop:
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure
- Jurassic World VelociCoaster
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
- Flight of the Hippogriff
Universal Studios Florida showed no upcoming early dates at the same check. Universal says parks, rides and times can change without notice. Our Universal Early Park Admission guide explains who qualifies and how to show it at the gate.
If you have Early Park Admission
- Hagrid’s first. Universal Express isn’t valid on Hagrid’s, so this early hour is the best line you’ll see all day, even if you’re staying at an Express hotel.
- VelociCoaster next. Jurassic Park sits right next to Hogsmeade, and VelociCoaster is on the early list.
- Forbidden Journey and Hippogriff. Ride them before the gates open to everyone, or come back later with Express if you have it.
- Then Hulk or Spider-Man. When the park opens, swing back toward the entrance and Marvel Super Hero Island.
If you arrive at regular opening
Day guests enter after the hotel crowd has had an hour in Hogsmeade, so pick one of two plans. Universal’s own one-day itinerary on its Discover Universal blog starts with The Incredible Hulk Coaster, because Marvel Super Hero Island is the first land past Port of Entry, then works around the park. Alternatively, if Hagrid’s is your must-do, walk straight to Hogsmeade at opening and accept the line, then do the Marvel rides later.
Either way, arrive before the official opening time to allow for parking, security and the walk through CityWalk. At last check, Universal’s standard theme park parking was $35 a day, including tax.
The big rides: what to know before you queue
| Ride | Min height | Express | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure | 48 in | No | Free ride locker; Child Swap |
| VelociCoaster | 51 in | Yes | Free locker; metal detector |
| Forbidden Journey | 48 in | Yes | Single Rider; Child Swap |
| Incredible Hulk Coaster | 54 in | Yes | Free locker; metal detector |
| Spider-Man | 40 in | Yes | 3-D motion simulator |
| Skull Island: Reign of Kong | 36 in | Yes | Parental advisory |
| Doctor Doom’s Fearfall | 52 in | Yes | Tower launch ride |
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the ride most first-timers want and the one with the fewest shortcuts. Universal says Universal Express and Express Unlimited are not valid here, so your choices are the early hour, the standby line or Child Swap if you have a small child. Loose articles aren’t allowed on the ride, and standard lockers at the entrance are free while you ride.

Jurassic World VelociCoaster is, in Universal’s words, the fastest and tallest launch coaster in Florida, launching to 70 mph in 2.4 seconds. You’ll pass through a metal detector before boarding, so leave everything in the free locker, including phones and anything in your pockets.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is inside Hogwarts castle, and the queue through the castle is part of the show. Universal’s ride page lists Single Rider and Child Swap here. It also has restraint size restrictions, and a test seat at the entrance lets you check the fit before you wait.

The Incredible Hulk Coaster launches you uphill and reaches a top speed of 67 mph, according to Universal, and like VelociCoaster it uses a metal detector. At 54 inches it has the highest minimum height at Universal Orlando, so measure children before you promise them a ride.

Next door, Doctor Doom’s Fearfall (52 inches) launches riders 185 feet up, while The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man takes riders from 40 inches, which makes it the Marvel ride most families can do together.
Ride closures to plan around (October 2026 to February 2027)
These come from Universal’s temporary closures list and ride pages, checked October 9, 2026. Dates can change.
| Attraction | Closed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Jurassic Park River Adventure | Jan 5 to Dec 16, 2026 | Reopens Dec 17, 2026 |
| Hogwarts Express | Nov 4, 2026 only | Reopens Nov 5, 2026 |
| Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges | Jan 4 to Feb 2, 2027 | Ripsaw Falls stays open |
| Forbidden Journey | Feb 8 to 19, 2027 | Plan Gringotts at Universal Studios |
The Hogwarts Express closure is a single day: Universal’s ride page says the train will be closed on November 4, 2026 and plans to reopen to guests on November 5. Universal Volcano Bay, the water park next door, also closes for maintenance from October 26, 2026, with reopening planned on or before April 1, 2027.
On the plus side, Universal lists Holidays at Universal from November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with Seuss Landing dressed up for Grinchmas and Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
Express, Single Rider, Child Swap and Virtual Line
- Universal Express: one shorter-line ride at each participating attraction. You can buy it ahead online; Universal says in-park passes have limited inventory and typically sell out.
- Express Unlimited: repeat Express rides all day at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. It’s free for guests of Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort; your room key is your pass.
- Not covered: Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Pteranodon Flyers at Islands of Adventure don’t take Express of any kind.
- Express Now: a single, timed Express entry sold only in the app, inside the park, on the day, when Universal releases it.
- Single Rider: available at select attractions, subject to availability. Forbidden Journey lists it; ask at the entrance of other rides.
- Child Swap: one adult waits with children who can’t or don’t want to ride, then swaps with a rider. Ask the attendant at the ride entrance before you split up.
- Virtual Line: the app can hold a return time for select experiences at Islands of Adventure. Universal says the system is in a technical rehearsal, so some features may not be available.
If you’re weighing an Express hotel against buying passes, our comparison of Universal hotels with Express Pass breaks down the trade-offs. For the wider resort, including tickets and the app, see our Universal Orlando tips for first-timers.
Lockers, loose items and getting wet
Universal’s theme park services page lists free standard-size ride lockers (14 by 5.5 by 16.9 inches) at four Islands of Adventure rides: The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Hagrid’s and VelociCoaster. Larger ride lockers cost extra, and prices are posted at each locker area.
- Water rides charge for lockers. Jurassic Park River Adventure, Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls have single-use lockers for a fee.
- All-day lockers are near the park entrance, and large lockers there can be rented for the day. Lockers aren’t transferable between parks.
- Expect to get soaked. Universal’s Ripsaw Falls page says “Plan to get very, very wet” and mentions human-sized drying machines nearby for a small fee. Universal says Bilge-Rat Barges riders get “really wet and squooshy,” too.
Islands of Adventure with young children
The park has the toughest minimums at Universal, but small kids still have plenty to do. Children under 48 inches need a supervising companion, whom Universal defines as someone 14 or older.
- No minimum height: Caro-Seuss-el, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Storm Force Accelatron and the Hogwarts Express, plus the play areas Camp Jurassic, If I Ran the Zoo and Me Ship, The Olive.
- 36 inches: The Cat in the Hat, The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride!, Flight of the Hippogriff and Skull Island: Reign of Kong (which carries a parental advisory).
- Pteranodon Flyers: designed for children 36 to 56 inches. Anyone over 56 inches must ride with a child who meets the 36-inch minimum, and Express isn’t valid.
Food and drink tips
- Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Universal lists it for Mobile Food and Drink Ordering in the app.
- Mythos Restaurant in The Lost Continent is a full-service restaurant, and Universal takes reservations online.
- Confisco Grille in Port of Entry also takes reservations, with a global menu, a children’s menu and a full bar.
- Mobile ordering in the app saves time at lunch.
Hogwarts Express and choosing your ticket
The Hogwarts Express runs between Hogsmeade Station at Islands of Adventure and King’s Cross Station at Universal Studios Florida. Universal requires a Park-to-Park ticket to board, so a one-park-per-day ticket won’t get you on the train. At last check, Universal’s one-day, one-park ticket for Islands of Adventure started from $124.99 plus tax, with prices varying by date.
If you’ll split days between the two original parks, plan Diagon Alley and Gringotts with our Universal Studios Florida tips, then ride the train in whichever direction fits your day.
Where to stay for Islands of Adventure
All of Universal’s on-site hotels include Early Park Admission, and several have walking paths to CityWalk and the park gates. These three cover the main budgets. Walking times are OSRM foot routes we measured from each hotel’s lobby or entrance to the Islands of Adventure gate in October 2026, at a steady pace and without security lines. For more options, see our list of hotels within walking distance of Universal.
Loews Royal Pacific Resort

Of these three hotels, Royal Pacific is the shortest walk to Islands of Adventure: about half a mile, roughly 10 minutes, from the lobby to the gate. It includes free Universal Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and there’s a free water taxi to CityWalk. Universal lists Garden View and Water View rooms at 335 square feet, and the resort has Jurassic World Kids’ Suites. Overnight self-parking is $36 a night and valet $45, plus tax, at the time of writing. Read our full Loews Royal Pacific Resort review.
See prices and availability at Loews Royal Pacific Resort. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book.
Hard Rock Hotel

Hard Rock is the other Express Unlimited hotel within an easy walk. We measured about 0.6 mile, around 13 minutes, from the front entrance to the Islands of Adventure gate. Universal lists rooms from 375 to 500 square feet, and Premier hotel guests also get the water taxi and shuttle buses. Self-parking is $36 a night and valet $45, plus tax, at the time of writing.

Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Cabana Bay is the budget-friendly way to get Early Park Admission without giving up the walk. Universal lists walking paths to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure; from the lobby we measured about a mile, roughly 22 to 23 minutes, and there’s a free shuttle bus to the CityWalk hub. Standard rooms are 300 square feet with two queen beds, and Family Suites are 430 square feet and sleep up to six with a kitchenette. Self-parking is $26 a night plus tax. Express isn’t included. See our Cabana Bay Beach Resort guide for the pools and suites.

Frequently asked questions
What should I ride first at Islands of Adventure?
If you have Early Park Admission, ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure first, because Universal Express isn’t valid on it and the early hour is your shortest wait. Follow with VelociCoaster and Forbidden Journey. Without early entry, start with The Incredible Hulk Coaster and Spider-Man near the entrance, as Universal’s own itinerary suggests, or head straight to Hagrid’s at opening if it’s your top priority.
Is Universal Express worth it at Islands of Adventure?
It helps on busy days because it covers VelociCoaster, Hulk, Forbidden Journey, Spider-Man and most other rides. It doesn’t cover Hagrid’s or Pteranodon Flyers, though, so you still need an early start for Hagrid’s. If you’d buy Express for several days, compare the cost with a stay at Hard Rock, Portofino Bay or Royal Pacific, which include Express Unlimited at both original parks.
Can you bring your phone on VelociCoaster and Hulk?
No. Universal’s Rider’s Guide says guests on Jurassic World VelociCoaster and The Incredible Hulk Coaster must pass through a metal detector, because loose articles are strictly prohibited. Store phones, keys and wallets in the free standard-size ride lockers at the entrance. They’re free while you ride; larger lockers cost extra. A non-riding member of your group can also hold your things.
How many days do you need for Islands of Adventure?
One full day covers the main rides for most first-timers, especially with Early Park Admission or Express. Add a second day if you want repeat rides on the coasters, have young children who need breaks, or visit at peak times. If you plan to see both Harry Potter areas and ride the Hogwarts Express, buy a Park-to-Park ticket.
Is Jurassic Park River Adventure open?
Not until mid-December 2026. Universal’s ride page says Jurassic Park River Adventure is temporarily closed for scheduled maintenance and will reopen on December 17, 2026. The closures list shows it closed from January 5 through December 16, 2026. Dates can change, so check the Universal Orlando Resort app before your visit.
Bottom line
Islands of Adventure rewards an early start more than any other Universal park. Put Hagrid’s at the top of your morning, travel light for VelociCoaster and Hulk, check the closures for your dates, and buy Park-to-Park if the Hogwarts Express matters to you. For the shortest walk and free Express, Loews Royal Pacific Resort is the easiest base; compare rates for Loews Royal Pacific Resort.
