The best hotels in Lakeland FL fall into two easy groups: a handful of historic and newer hotels downtown, around Lake Mirror and the RP Funding Center, and a cluster of brand-name hotels just off I-4 on the north side of town, near the Detroit Tigers’ spring training ballpark. One more sits on the south side next to Lakeland Linder International Airport.

Lakeland, in Polk County, sits on I-4 between Tampa and Orlando, so it works as a halfway base: LEGOLAND Florida is roughly 40 minutes away, Busch Gardens about 45 minutes and the Disney parks closer to an hour in light traffic. It is also a pleasant small city in its own right, built around 38 named lakes, with the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture at Florida Southern College.

Below are seven Lakeland hotels we would shortlist, with the parking fees, breakfast, pet rules and road distances we could verify, plus tips on which side of town suits your trip.

Quick answer: For character and a lake view, book The Terrace Hotel, a 1924 landmark on Lake Mirror. For a downtown base with free breakfast and free parking, SpringHill Suites is the strongest value, and Hyatt Place is next door to the RP Funding Center. For spring training or a fast I-4 getaway, the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express sit about 2 miles from the ballpark. Families staying a week should look at Home2 Suites (in-suite kitchens, two-queen studios for up to six), and Hilton Garden Inn suits SUN ‘n FUN and Tampa-bound trips.

How we chose these Lakeland hotels

We did not rank hotels on review scores. Every pick had to pass a few practical tests:

  • Location: a Lakeland address either downtown (walkable to Lake Mirror, Munn Park or the RP Funding Center) or within a couple of minutes of an I-4 or Polk Parkway interchange.
  • Verified amenities: parking, breakfast, pools and pet rules come from the hotels’ own brand pages, using archived copies where the live page was unavailable. Anything older than a month is flagged “at last check,” with the month.
  • Transport: road distances and light-traffic drive times come from our own route checks (OSRM) to the actual parking areas, not the hotels’ marketing figures, which are sometimes straight-line distances.
  • Value: free breakfast and free parking count. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book, and Polk County adds 12% in sales and tourist taxes to the room rate.

Things to do near Lakeland hotels

  • Lake Mirror and Hollis Garden: the city suggests starting with a stroll around the historic promenade at Lake Mirror, which The Terrace overlooks, and Hollis Garden, a classical botanical garden in the city’s parks system about 0.3 miles from the hotel by Hilton’s count.
  • Lake Morton’s swans: the lake is a bird sanctuary whose swan flock dates to 1957, when Queen Elizabeth II gave the city a pair. The city rounds the flock up every year for a veterinary check (in late October in 2025).
  • Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern College: thirteen Wright-designed structures stand on the campus. The Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center (840 Johnson Avenue) is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the college strongly suggests booking tours at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Detroit Tigers spring training: the team plays at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, 2301 Lakeland Hills Boulevard. At the time of writing the Tigers’ spring training page still said to check back for 2027 information, so confirm game dates before you book. Gates open two hours before first pitch, and most bags are not allowed.

Lakeland also makes a good stop on a longer Florida loop. Our day-by-day Orlando itinerary can help you plan the theme park days around a Lakeland stay, and if your trip falls in March, see our guide to spring break in Orlando.

How to choose a hotel in Lakeland

  • Want to walk to dinner and the lakes: stay downtown at The Terrace, SpringHill Suites or Hyatt Place.
  • Going to a concert or convention at the RP Funding Center: Hyatt Place is next door and SpringHill Suites is a block away.
  • Spring training: the Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Home2 Suites are all about 2 miles from the ballpark.
  • LEGOLAND with little kids: any pick works for a day trip, but if LEGOLAND is the main event, our hotels near LEGOLAND Florida guide covers the on-site hotels and Winter Haven.
  • Mostly Disney: Lakeland is a compromise. If the parks are the priority, nearby hotels in Davenport or the main Orlando areas in our where to stay in Orlando guide save a lot of driving.
  • Traveling with a dog: Hyatt Place, Home2 Suites, the Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn accept pets for a fee; The Terrace, SpringHill Suites and Holiday Inn Express do not.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lakeland a good base for Disney World and Busch Gardens?

It works if you want both. From the north I-4 hotels, EPCOT’s parking lot is about 35 to 37 road miles (around 50 minutes without traffic) and Busch Gardens about 32 to 35 miles. If you plan several Disney days, though, the daily I-4 drive adds up and traffic can be heavy; a hotel in Davenport or Kissimmee is closer to the parks.

How far is Lakeland from LEGOLAND Florida?

LEGOLAND, in Winter Haven, is about 22 road miles from downtown Lakeland, roughly 40 minutes without traffic, by our route check. From the hotels on the north side of town along I-4 it is about 25 miles, and from Hilton Garden Inn on the south side about 24 miles. That makes Lakeland an easy day-trip base, though not a walk-to-the-gate option.

Which hotels in Lakeland FL have free breakfast?

Of our picks, Hyatt Place, SpringHill Suites, Home2 Suites, the Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn Express include breakfast. SpringHill, Home2 and Hampton serve a hot breakfast, and the Holiday Inn Express has its Express Start buffet. At The Terrace Hotel and Hilton Garden Inn, breakfast costs extra, but both have an on-site restaurant.

Where should you stay in Lakeland for Tigers spring training?

Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium is on Lakeland Hills Boulevard, just south of I-4. The Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express and Home2 Suites are each about 2 road miles away, with free or low-cost parking and free breakfast. Downtown hotels are about 2 to 3 miles away and give you more restaurants within walking distance after the game.

Is there a hotel within walking distance of the RP Funding Center?

Yes. Hyatt Place Lakeland Center is right next door, and SpringHill Suites by Marriott Lakeland is a block away, about 0.4 road miles by our route check. The Terrace Hotel is about 0.6 miles away by Hilton’s count, a pleasant walk through downtown past Munn Park. All three let you skip event parking.

Which Lakeland hotels allow pets?

Hyatt Place accepts up to two dogs ($100 per stay for up to six nights). Home2 Suites takes pets up to 40 pounds, and the Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn up to 75 pounds; fees start at $75, rising to $125 at Home2 and Hampton for stays of five nights or more, at last check. The Terrace, SpringHill Suites and Holiday Inn Express do not allow pets. Service animals are not treated as pets.

Bottom line

For most visitors, the best hotels in Lakeland FL are downtown: The Terrace for history and lake views, SpringHill Suites for free breakfast, free parking and a pool, and Hyatt Place for RP Funding Center events. Spring training fans and road-trippers do best on the north side by I-4, and Hilton Garden Inn suits SUN ‘n FUN and Tampa day trips. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book, so compare a few dates. Check current rates at SpringHill Suites by Marriott Lakeland
