Orlando in September is hot, stormy and, once Labor Day passes, light on school breaks. Average highs sit near 90°F, rain falls on about 14 days, and the Atlantic hurricane season peaks on September 10. In return, you get the start of the Halloween season, EPCOT’s Food & Wine Festival and nearly two weeks with no breaks on the school calendars we checked.
This guide covers September 2027, using NOAA climate normals, the National Hurricane Center, official school calendars and what Disney, Universal and SeaWorld had published by October 14, 2026, when most 2027 event dates weren’t out yet.
Quick answer: Expect highs near 90°F, nights in the low 70s and about 6.4 inches of rain over roughly 14 days, mostly from afternoon storms. Labor Day weekend (September 4–6, 2027) is the likely busy start, September 7–19 has no breaks on the calendars we checked, and two Georgia districts take fall break September 20–24. Halloween Horror Nights, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Food & Wine all ran through September in 2026; their 2027 dates weren’t announced at the time of writing. Orlando weather in September
NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International Airport put the September average high at 89.6°F, two degrees below August’s, and the low at 72.4°F. A typical September 1 runs from 73.5°F to 90.8°F, and a typical September 30 from 70.5°F to 88.0°F.

The daily normals give September 1 about a 51% chance of measurable rain, easing to about 40% by September 30. The National Weather Service office in Melbourne explains that summer storms build in the afternoon as the Gulf and Atlantic sea breezes collide, which is why the inland area between Tampa and Cape Canaveral is often called the “Lightning Capital of the United States.” It puts the median start of Orlando’s dry season at October 15, so September normally falls in the wet season.
Lightning pauses outdoor rides, pools and water parks, so plan outdoor time for mornings and keep an indoor option for mid-afternoon. Sunset moves from about 7:48 p.m. on September 1 to 7:14 p.m. on September 30. Hurricane season peaks in September
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) defines the Atlantic season as June 1 to November 30 and puts its peak on September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Based on 1991–2020, an average season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes, but those are totals for the whole Atlantic basin, not Florida landfalls.
Orlando is inland and spared storm surge, yet Hurricane Irma (September 2017) and Hurricane Ian (September 2022) both brought flooding to Central Florida, as our Orlando hurricane season guide details. What the parks promise, checked on their official pages in October 2026 (Universal’s via a June 2026 archive copy):
- Walt Disney World: if the NHC issues a hurricane warning for Orlando or your home area within 7 days of arrival, you can reschedule or cancel Disney packages and most room-only reservations booked directly with Disney without Disney’s fees. Other suppliers keep their own rules.
- Universal Orlando: a hurricane or tropical storm warning, or a state of emergency, for Orlando or your home area within seven days of arrival covers packages, room-only stays and park tickets booked directly with Universal, but not hotel bookings made after the warning.
- SeaWorld Orlando: its Weather-or-Not Assurance offers a return visit if weather closes the park early, rides close for more than 60 minutes or the heat index reaches 110 degrees; request it within one week.
- Your hotel: a Booking.com reservation follows the property’s own cancellation terms, so pick a free-cancellation rate and note the deadline.
Orlando crowds in September 2027, week by week
Disney and Universal don’t publish crowd forecasts, so this is our reading of official calendars (checked in October 2026), not a prediction. Cobb County, Georgia, starts school on August 2, Gwinnett County on August 4, Edinburgh on August 18 and Kent on September 1.

September 1–6: Labor Day weekend
Labor Day is Monday, September 6, 2027, so the long weekend runs September 4–6. It’s the last US holiday weekend of summer, and if 2027 follows 2026, Food & Wine and Halloween Horror Nights will already be running.
September 7–19: the quiet middle
None of the calendars in our table has a break between Labor Day and September 19. If your dates are flexible, this is the stretch to aim for, though it includes the September 10 hurricane peak, so book refundable rates.
September 20–30: Georgia fall breaks
Cobb County schools close for fall break from September 20 to 24, and Marietta City Schools moved its break to the same week to match. Edinburgh adds a Monday holiday on September 20. Unlike 2026, when Rosh Hashanah began on September 11, the Jewish High Holidays fall in October in 2027: Rosh Hashanah starts at sundown on October 1 and Yom Kippur is October 11, the start of Gwinnett’s fall break.
Disney and Universal both price tickets by date, which can hint at expected demand. Florida residents get extra options: at the time of writing, Disney advertised year-round resident savings of 30% on 3-Day and 40% on 4-Day date-based tickets. Only SeaWorld had posted fall 2027 month ranges by October 14, 2026, so use the 2026 dates as a guide, not a promise.

EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival
The 2026 festival runs from August 27 to November 21 and is included with valid EPCOT admission, though Disney notes that some ticket types need a park reservation. Food and drink at the festival-exclusive Global Marketplaces cost extra, and the Eat to the Beat Concert Series adds live music, with dining packages that guarantee a seat.

Halloween Horror Nights
Universal’s 35th Halloween Horror Nights runs on select nights from August 28 to November 1, 2026 at Universal Studios Florida; in September it ran every Wednesday to Sunday. It’s a separate ticket, gates open at 6:30 p.m., and Universal doesn’t recommend it for children under 13. It runs rain or shine with no refunds.
On the October 2026 event nights we checked, Universal’s calendar had Universal Studios Florida closing to day guests at 5 p.m., against 7 p.m. on a non-event night such as October 20, and its free self-parking after 6 p.m. doesn’t apply on event nights. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party
Disney’s separate-ticket party at Magic Kingdom runs on select nights from August 7 to October 31, 2026, including 13 September nights, and Disney lists every 2026 date as sold out. It runs from 7 p.m. to midnight, ticket holders can enter from 4 p.m., and the date-specific ticket needs no separate park ticket or reservation. Highlights include Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade and trick-or-treating.
Party nights shorten the regular day: Disney’s calendar showed Magic Kingdom open to day guests from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 15, 2026, a party night, against 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on October 17, a non-party Saturday.
SeaWorld, Magical Dining and more
- Howl-O-Scream: SeaWorld’s separately ticketed night event, designed for mature audiences, runs on select nights from September 11 to October 31, 2026, starting at 7 p.m.; SeaWorld lists it for September to October 2027.
- Halloween Spooktacular: the daytime family event is included with park admission; SeaWorld lists it for August to October 2027.
- Electric Ocean: SeaWorld lists its summer nighttime event from May to September 2027.
- Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining: three-course, prix-fixe dinners at participating restaurants for six weeks from August, with part of each meal going to local nonprofits. It returns in August 2027.
Water parks and pools in September 2027
- Universal Volcano Bay: closing for maintenance from October 26, 2026, with a planned reopening on or before April 1, 2027, so it should be open in September; Universal says dates may change.
- Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon: temporarily closed, with no reopening date when we checked; Disney points guests to Blizzard Beach.
- Disney’s Blizzard Beach: Disney says at least one of its water parks opens each day except in inclement weather, and same-day closures can come with little notice.
Park hours, early entry and what’s new
- Disney Early Theme Park Entry: guests of Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels enter Disney’s theme parks 30 minutes early every day, and Disney says this continues through 2027.
- Lightning Lane: guests of Disney Resort hotels and a few other hotels on Disney property can buy Lightning Lane passes 7 days before their stay; everyone else gets 3 days.
- Universal Early Park Admission: Universal’s page listed dates only through November 30, 2026 at the time of writing.
- New and returning: Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge on Bay Lake is due to open July 1, 2027, and Disney expects Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, closed since July 6, 2026, back in late spring 2027.

September’s heat and storms reward a short trip back to your room. Three options sold on Booking.com, one for each kind of September trip: Disney, Halloween Horror Nights and SeaWorld.
Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista – Disney Springs Area: Disney days and rainy afternoons
This 814-room Hilton at 1751 Hotel Plaza Boulevard links to Disney Springs by a pedestrian skybridge, so a stormy afternoon can turn into shopping and dinner without the car. It’s on Disney’s Early Entry list, and Hilton counts its Disney theme-park shuttle among the resort-charge inclusions, while the Disney Springs hotels’ site calls the four-park shuttle complimentary; by road, the EPCOT and Hollywood Studios lots are each about 5 miles away. - Good to know: at last check (a June 2026 capture of Hilton’s page), the daily resort charge covered internet, the Disney shuttle, bottled water, a $10 arcade card and breakfast for children 5 and under, but Hilton gave no amount. Self-parking was $38 and valet $48 a night, plus 6.5% tax. Hilton Honors perks apply only to bookings made with Hilton. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book.

Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando: the shortest walk back from the scares
Universal calls Hard Rock Hotel, at 5800 Universal Boulevard, the closest hotel to Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and our walking route from the Universal Studios Florida entrance is about 0.4 mile, under 10 minutes, even after a late Halloween Horror Nights. Guests get free Universal Express Unlimited at both original parks during regular hours (not valid at Volcano Bay, Hagrid’s, Pteranodon Flyers or separately ticketed events such as Halloween Horror Nights), Early Park Admission and the dedicated event entrance. - Good to know: at the time of writing, Universal’s hotel page listed overnight self-parking at $36 and valet at $45 per night plus tax and $55 a day for each adult beyond two, with no resort fee among its charges; two-queen rooms sleep up to five (a rollaway may be needed). Perks are tied to your room key, so confirm them at check-in if you book through a third party. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book.

Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld: walk back from Howl-O-Scream
Marriott says this hotel at 6677 Sea Harbor Drive sits directly across from SeaWorld, and our route checks put the park entrance about 10 minutes away on foot, so you can walk back from Howl-O-Scream instead of driving. As an official SeaWorld hotel, it advertises benefits for registered guests such as priority entry and discounts on tickets and food. The soaring atrium is a comfortable place to wait out a storm, and the outdoor R Aqua Zone has water slides and a toddler play area. Marriott lists a daily shuttle to Walt Disney World, Universal and Epic Universe, and the hotel’s booking site says its resort fee covers four seats a day. - Good to know: at last check (a June 2026 capture of Marriott’s page), self-parking was $44 and valet $56 a day. Neither that page nor the booking site gives the fee amount, so confirm the full total before you pay, and ask at check-in which SeaWorld benefits apply to your booking. The hotel isn’t on Disney’s Early Entry list. Marriott Bonvoy perks apply only to bookings made with Marriott. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book.

Should I worry about hurricanes in Orlando in September?
Plan for them rather than worry. The NHC puts the season’s peak on September 10, and Irma (2017) and Ian (2022) both affected the Orlando area in September. Disney and Universal let you change direct bookings without their fees if an official warning is issued within seven days of arrival (Universal also counts a state of emergency). For anything else, choose free cancellation.
When do Halloween Horror Nights and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party start in 2027?
Neither had 2027 dates when we checked in October 2026. In 2026, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party began on August 7 at Magic Kingdom and Halloween Horror Nights on August 28 at Universal Studios Florida, and both ran through September. Is the EPCOT Food & Wine Festival on in September?
It was in 2026, when the festival ran from August 27 to November 21, included with EPCOT admission (some ticket types need a park reservation). Disney hadn’t announced 2027 dates at the time of writing, so treat the 2026 run as a guide and confirm on Disney’s festival page before you book.
