The most useful Animal Kingdom tips start with the clock: Disney’s Animal Kingdom often closes earlier than the other Walt Disney World parks, its headliners have the longest morning lines, and some animal trails and rides open after the gates do. Plan for a park that rewards early starts, from Avatar Flight of Passage in Pandora to Kilimanjaro Safaris and Expedition Everest.
We checked Disney’s official pages (the English Canada version of its site) on October 8, 2026. Hours and line-ups change often, so confirm in the My Disney Experience app before you go.
Quick answer: Check closing time first: Disney’s calendar showed 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on most dates we checked from October to early December 2026. Arrive before opening, ride Avatar Flight of Passage first (or buy its Single Pass), do Kilimanjaro Safaris in the morning, plan shows around lunch and pack a poncho for Kali River Rapids.

Animal Kingdom tips before you go: hours and planning
Disney says date-based tickets no longer need a theme park reservation (other admission types may), so your bookings are dining and Lightning Lane. The bigger planning point is the short day.
| Date checked | Early Entry | Park hours |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 8, 2026 | 7:30 to 8:00 AM | 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM |
| Oct 10, 2026 | 7:30 to 8:00 AM | 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM |
| Oct 24, 2026 | 7:30 to 8:00 AM | 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM |
| Nov 13 and 27, Dec 5 and 7, 2026 | 7:30 to 8:00 AM | 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM |
On October 10, Magic Kingdom was listed until 11:00 PM. Disney’s calendar only reached early December when we checked, and hours change, so check again the week before. Book table-service meals when your 60-day window opens, and buy Lightning Lane when yours opens (7 or 3 days ahead, see below).
Getting to Animal Kingdom and parking
Animal Kingdom sits in the southwest corner of Walt Disney World, off Osceola Parkway. Unlike Magic Kingdom, there’s no transfer: courtesy trams run from the parking lot to the main entrance.
| How you arrive | Where you’re dropped | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Your own car | Lots such as Peacock, Giraffe or Yeti | Tram to the main entrance |
| Disney Resort hotel bus | Animal Kingdom bus stop | From 45 min before opening |
| Rideshare | Pickup area in the parking lot | Keep left as you exit the park |
| Minnie Van | Request in the Lyft app | Keep right as you exit |
| Non-Disney hotel shuttle | Often the charter bus area | Fixed times; check returns |
- Parking: at the time of writing, standard theme park parking is $35 a day and preferred parking $50, $55 or $60, tax included. One fee covers all four parks that day, and standard parking is included for Disney Resort hotel guests.
- Buses: Disney Resort buses run from 45 minutes before opening until an hour after closing.
Driving? Follow Disney’s signs to Animal Kingdom’s parking toll plaza, off Osceola Parkway; map apps sometimes suggest backstage roads guests can’t use. Our guide to hotels near Animal Kingdom compares the closest Disney resorts and off-site hotels by road distance.
Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Hours
Early Theme Park Entry lets guests of Disney Resort hotels and 15 other hotels into any Disney theme park 30 minutes before opening, every day of their stay, including check-in and check-out days; Disney says it continues through 2027. Disney’s calendar showed Animal Kingdom’s Early Entry from 7:30 to 8:00 AM on every date in the table above.
Disney plans four Animal Kingdom attractions for that half hour:
- Avatar Flight of Passage
- Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
- Na’vi River Journey
- Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
The 15 include the Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve, Four Seasons and eight hotels near Disney Springs, such as Drury Plaza. You need valid admission plus a MagicBand, MagicMobile pass or Key to the World Card. See our list of non-Disney hotels with Early Theme Park Entry for each hotel’s perks.
Extended Evening Hours, on select nights at select parks, go only to Disney Deluxe and Deluxe Villa resorts (Animal Kingdom Lodge included), the Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve and Shades of Green, with the same four Animal Kingdom attractions.
Rope drop: plan your first hour
“Rope drop” means being at the gate at opening. At Animal Kingdom, where you sleep shapes the plan.
- With Early Entry: go straight to Avatar Flight of Passage. It’s the park’s only Single Pass ride, so riding it standby early can save you a purchase. Then pick Na’vi River Journey next door or walk to Expedition Everest.
- Without Early Entry: by official opening, those four rides have had a 30-minute head start. Consider buying the Flight of Passage Single Pass, and head first to Kilimanjaro Safaris, which isn’t on the Early Entry list; on October 8, Disney listed it from 8:15 AM, 15 minutes after the park opened.
- By hotel shuttle: check the first departure; a 9:00 AM bus arrives after the morning rush starts.
Some areas start later: on October 8, Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail opened at 8:30 AM, and Kali River Rapids, Maharajah Jungle Trek and the Wildlife Express Train at 9:00 AM.
Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey
Pandora – The World of Avatar has the park’s two most popular rides. Flight of Passage is a 3D flight on the back of a mountain banshee, with a 44-inch (112 cm) minimum height. Na’vi River Journey is a gentle indoor boat ride through a glowing rainforest, open to any height.
- Stay for dusk: Disney says Pandora’s plants light up with bioluminescence each night, so a late walk through the Valley of Mo’ara is worth it on days the park stays open after dark.
- Eat here: Satu’li Canteen, the land’s quick-service restaurant, takes Mobile Orders and opened at 8:00 AM on the day we checked.
Kilimanjaro Safaris: when to go
Kilimanjaro Safaris takes you in an open-air vehicle, with a guide, through the Harambe Wildlife Reserve: 110 acres and 34 species, according to the attraction page. The ride lasts about 20 minutes (Disney says 18 on that page and 22 on its park map), and there’s no height minimum.

Disney doesn’t promise a best time; its animal care team says animals’ routines change through the day and many rest in shady spots. Our advice: ride in the morning, when it’s cooler for you too, and again later if lines allow, since no two trips are the same.
Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids
Expedition Everest is the park’s big coaster: a train climbs into the Himalayas, then runs backward in the dark before the Yeti appears. Disney requires 44 inches (112 cm) and warns of loud noises, fast drops, high speeds and frightening effects for children.

Kali River Rapids, also in Asia, is a whitewater raft ride with a 38-inch (97 cm) minimum and a plunge down a 20-foot slope. Disney says you may get soaked, so pack a poncho or dry clothes.

Lockers for phones sit across from the entrance, first come, first served.
Shows, animal trails and Conservation Station
Shows fill the middle of the day. Disney’s times for October 8, 2026 (check the app’s Tip Board):
- Festival of the Lion King: hourly from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Harambe Theatre. Seating is limited and not guaranteed with admission.
- Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!: a 25-minute puppet musical at Theater in the Wild, from 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Feathered Friends in Flight!: an outdoor bird show from 10:45 AM to 3:45 PM; it may be cancelled in bad weather and doesn’t run every day.
- Zootopia: Better Zoogether!: a 4D show in the Tree of Life Theater, which also runs during Early Entry.
- Winged Encounters: free-flying macaws near the Tree of Life, hourly from 8:15 AM to 12:15 PM.
Tree of Life Awakenings, the projection show on the park’s icon, starts after dark and repeats about every 10 minutes until closing. On early-closing days you may miss it: Disney’s page showed no performance on October 8.
Walking trails
Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail (gorillas, hippos, meerkats) and Maharajah Jungle Trek (tigers, Komodo dragon, flying foxes and more than 50 bird species) are self-guided walks.

Conservation Station, Bluey and kangaroos
The Wildlife Express Train is the only way to Conservation Station: a 7-minute, 1.2-mile ride from Harambe. There you’ll find animal care windows, kangaroos and wallabies at Jumping Junction, and Bluey’s Wild World, a group play session with Bluey and Bingo (no individual photos). On October 8 the train ran only from 9:00 AM to 4:15 PM, so don’t leave it late.
What happened to DinoLand U.S.A.?
DINOSAUR gave its last rides on February 1, 2026, and DinoLand U.S.A. closed permanently the next day to make way for Tropical Americas, according to the Disney Parks Blog. Disney’s May 2026 park guidemap no longer shows DinoLand U.S.A. and marks the area “Future home of Tropical Americas”; Theater in the Wild, home of the Nemo show, stays open.
Disney describes Tropical Americas as an 11-acre land built around the town of Pueblo Esperanza, with attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones. A Disney Parks Blog update of April 30, 2026, says it opens in 2027, without a date.
Lightning Lane at Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom has the simplest Lightning Lane set-up at Walt Disney World: no tiers and nine experiences in total.
| Pass | What it covers here | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Single Pass | Avatar Flight of Passage | One ride, arrival window |
| Multi Pass | Any 3 of 8 experiences | Add more after your first |
| Premier Pass | One entry to every available Lightning Lane | No windows, limited quantities |
The eight Multi Pass experiences are Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Kali River Rapids, Na’vi River Journey, Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, Feathered Friends in Flight! and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!. Disney Resort, Swan, Dolphin, Swan Reserve and Shades of Green guests buy from 7 days before check-in; everyone else buys 3 days ahead, from 7:00 AM Eastern. Prices vary by date.
With four shows among the eight (counting the Zootopia 4D show), Multi Pass matters less here than at Magic Kingdom. Our Disney Lightning Lane guide explains each pass in detail.
Height requirements, Rider Switch and kids
Only three Animal Kingdom rides have a minimum height, and Disney’s Rider Switch list for the park has four attractions.
| Attraction | Minimum height | Rider Switch |
|---|---|---|
| Kali River Rapids | 38 in (97 cm) | Yes |
| Avatar Flight of Passage | 44 in (112 cm) | Yes |
| Expedition Everest | 44 in (112 cm) | Yes |
| Na’vi River Journey | Any height | Yes |
To use Rider Switch, tell the Cast Member at the entrance with your whole group: one party rides while the other waits, then up to two people from the waiting party board without the standard wait. Our Disney World height requirements guide lists every ride by park.
Dining and park rules
Table-service meals book 60 days ahead, and you need valid park admission to dine inside the park. At the time of writing, Disney listed:
- Tusker House Restaurant: a buffet with Donald Duck and friends, serving breakfast from 7:30 AM.
- Tiffins: the park’s signature restaurant, with lunch and an early dinner.
- Yak & Yeti Restaurant: pan-Asian dishes in Asia.
- Rainforest Cafe: at the main entrance.
- Mobile Order: available at quick-service spots such as Satu’li Canteen.
Two rules set this park apart: balloons and plastic straws aren’t permitted (the same goes for Disney’s water parks and Animal Kingdom Lodge). The general rules also apply: bags are screened, strollers can’t exceed 31 x 52 inches and wagons aren’t allowed.
Hotels that make Animal Kingdom mornings easier
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is next door, but Disney resorts aren’t sold on Booking.com; these three are. Distances are OSRM road routes to the Animal Kingdom parking entrance, without traffic.
Walt Disney World Swan

The Swan, about 3 miles by road from the Animal Kingdom lot, gets Disney’s full set of perks: Early Entry for Flight of Passage, Extended Evening Hours and the 7-day Lightning Lane window. The resort says buses leave about every 20 to 25 minutes for Animal Kingdom, and theme park parking is free with your room key and app reservation confirmation. At the time of writing, its FAQ listed a mandatory $50-a-day resort service package plus tax, and Disney lists hotel self-parking at $40 a day plus tax.

Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando – Disney Springs Area

Drury Plaza, about 7 miles by road, is the value pick with Early Entry: no resort fee and a free hot breakfast from 6:00 to 10:00 AM. Its free, first-come shuttle serves all four parks; for the week of October 5, 2026, the first Animal Kingdom bus left at 6:45 AM and the last return at 7:30 PM. The hotel’s FAQ lists self-parking at $25 plus tax a day, though the Drury Hotels brand site lists $28 plus tax a night, so confirm when you book.

Margaritaville Resort Orlando

Margaritaville, off US-192, is about 4 miles by road from the lot via Sherberth Road and Osceola Parkway, but it has no Early Entry. Its shuttle operator’s booking system listed one Animal Kingdom run for October 28 and November 18, 2026, out at 9:15 AM and back at 5:45 PM (the resort’s page may still show its January schedule, 9:05 AM and 5:15 PM); seats must be reserved 24 hours to 1 hour ahead and strollers aren’t allowed, so drive for an opening-time start. At the time of writing, the resort fee is $48 plus tax a night and self-parking $20 plus tax; guests must be 21 to check in. Our Margaritaville Resort Orlando review covers rooms and cottages.

Frequently asked questions
What time does Animal Kingdom close?
Earlier than the other Disney parks on many days. Disney’s calendar showed a 6:00 PM close on most dates we checked between October and early December 2026, with 7:00 PM on October 10 and 8:00 PM on October 24. Opening was 8:00 AM, with Early Entry from 7:30 AM. Check the calendar the week before you go.
What should you ride first at Animal Kingdom?
Avatar Flight of Passage, if you have Early Entry: it’s on Disney’s Early Entry list and is the park’s only Single Pass ride, so riding it standby early can save money. Without Early Entry, consider the Single Pass and start with Kilimanjaro Safaris, which isn’t part of Early Entry, or Expedition Everest.
Is Lightning Lane worth it at Animal Kingdom?
Often less than elsewhere. Animal Kingdom has only nine Lightning Lane experiences, four of them shows, and no tiers. The Flight of Passage Single Pass is the purchase most likely to pay off if you can’t arrive early. Multi Pass helps on busy dates or short visits for Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Na’vi River Journey.
When is the best time to do Kilimanjaro Safaris?
Disney doesn’t name one, and says animals’ routines change through the day and many rest in the shade. A morning ride is cooler for you and fits around the rides that run during Early Entry; on October 8, 2026, the safari opened at 8:15 AM. A second ride later can show you different animals.
Is DINOSAUR still open at Animal Kingdom?
No. DINOSAUR closed permanently on February 2, 2026, to make way for Tropical Americas, a land with attractions inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones that Disney says opens in 2027. Disney’s May 2026 park map marks the former DinoLand U.S.A. area as its future home. The Finding Nemo show at nearby Theater in the Wild still runs.
Can you bring balloons or straws into Animal Kingdom?
No. Disney’s property rules say balloons and plastic straws aren’t permitted at Animal Kingdom, Disney’s water parks or Animal Kingdom Lodge. Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks are otherwise allowed under the usual rules, without glass containers, in bags no larger than 24 x 15 x 18 inches.
Bottom line
These Animal Kingdom tips come down to the morning: check the closing time, be at the gate early, ride Flight of Passage first or buy its Single Pass, see the safari before the heat and save Kali River Rapids and the shows for the afternoon. If you want Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours on Booking.com, the Walt Disney World Swan is the strongest base.
