The best things to do in Orlando when it rains are the big indoor rides at Disney, Universal and SeaWorld, the air-conditioned exhibit halls at Kennedy Space Center and the Orlando Science Center, and the indoor attractions clustered on International Drive. Most Orlando rain arrives as a short afternoon thunderstorm rather than an all-day soaking, so a wet forecast usually means reshuffling your day, not cancelling it.
Below: how Orlando’s rain behaves, what closes in the parks during storms, which indoor rides to save, the best rain-proof attractions and hotels that are easy to enjoy indoors. Hours and policies change, so confirm them on the official sites before you go.
Quick answer: On a rainy Orlando day, spend the morning outdoors if the forecast allows, then move to indoor rides or an indoor attraction for the afternoon storm window. Good bets include Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, the Orlando Science Center, ICON Park’s indoor attractions, WonderWorks and Crayola Experience. If you’re at SeaWorld, know its Weather-or-Not Assurance, and if you’re booking hurricane season, read Disney’s hurricane policy before you pay.

How rain works in Orlando
Central Florida has two very different rain seasons. According to the National Weather Service office in Melbourne, the median start of the rainy season in Orlando is May 27 and the median start of the dry season is October 15. In summer you can usually count on clouds building in the afternoon, often when sea breezes from both coasts collide inland. In the cooler months, rain is much less frequent and some months see only a few rainy days.
The NWS also notes that the inland stretch between Tampa and Cape Canaveral is often called the “Lightning Capital of the United States.” That matters more to your park day than the rain itself: lightning, not drizzle, is what shuts down outdoor rides, pools and water parks.
| Period | Typical pattern | How to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Late May to mid-October | Hot mornings, afternoon storms | Outdoor rides early, indoor plans mid-afternoon |
| Mid-October to late May | Drier, fewer rain days | Rain is less likely to shape the day |
| June 1 to November 30 | Atlantic hurricane season | Watch forecasts and know your cancellation terms |
If you’re still choosing dates, our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Orlando weighs weather against crowds and prices.
Theme park rain strategy: what closes and what keeps running
Rain alone rarely closes a theme park. Indoor rides, shows and restaurants generally keep running, though their queues grow as people come in out of the rain. Outdoor attractions are different. Universal states in its official rider guide that parks, attractions or entertainment may close because of weather, and SeaWorld’s own policy refers to rides closing for lightning, strong winds, heat or rain. The parks don’t publish exact lightning thresholds, so treat any outdoor roller coaster, water ride or open-air show as “might pause” once storms are nearby.
Indoor rides to save for a storm
Ride the big outdoor coasters in the morning and hold indoor favorites for the storm window. Some queues are partly outdoors, so keep the poncho handy.
| Park | Indoor headliners | Also indoors |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Kingdom | Space Mountain | Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mickey’s PhilharMagic |
| EPCOT | Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind | Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Spaceship Earth |
| Hollywood Studios | Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance | Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Toy Story Mania |
| Animal Kingdom | Avatar Flight of Passage | Na’vi River Journey |
| Universal Studios Florida | Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy | MEN IN BLACK Alien Attack, The Simpsons Ride, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem |
| Islands of Adventure | Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey | The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, The Cat in the Hat |
| Epic Universe | Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge | Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment |
| SeaWorld Orlando | Expedition Odyssey: Fire & Ice | Shark Encounter |
Attraction line-ups change with refurbishments, so check the official Disney, Universal or SeaWorld app on the day for temporary closures and live wait times. At SeaWorld, Expedition Odyssey: Fire & Ice is a story-driven simulator (39-inch minimum height at the time of writing) that ends with a look at beluga whales and walruses, and Shark Encounter is an indoor walk-through animal exhibit.
Water parks on stormy days
Water parks are the most weather-sensitive part of an Orlando trip. Disney notes that its water parks are subject to weather closures, and a thunderstorm can pause or close a water park on the day with little notice, so check the My Disney Experience app before you go. At the time of writing, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon was temporarily closed for refurbishment (since September 9, 2026, with no reopening date announced), and Disney was pointing guests to Blizzard Beach instead.
Universal’s Volcano Bay has its own quirk: Universal has said its pools, rivers and rides use water heated to over 80 degrees, but the park closes on cold days, and if it closes for weather it stays closed for the whole day. Volcano Bay is also scheduled to close for maintenance from October 26, 2026, with reopening expected on or before April 1, 2027. On a summer afternoon, plan a water park for the morning and have a dry backup ready.
SeaWorld’s Weather-or-Not Assurance
SeaWorld Orlando is the one major park with a published rain promise. Under its Weather-or-Not Assurance, you can request a free return-visit ticket if bad weather forces an early closure or cuts operating hours, if rides are closed for more than 60 minutes because of lightning, strong winds, heat, rain or snow, or if the heat index reaches 110 degrees or more. You request it at Guest Relations or through SeaWorld’s online form within a week of your visit, with your original ticket or order number.
There are exclusions: annual passes, complimentary tickets, 14-Day Length of Stay packages and Discovery Cove tickets don’t qualify, and parking, lockers, Quick Queue and other upgrades aren’t included in the return visit. Read the current terms before you rely on it.
A simple rain kit
- Ponchos from home: they pack small and spare you a stop at a park shop.
- Zip-top bags and quick-dry shoes: to keep phones dry and feet comfortable.
- Weather and park apps: radar shows when the storm will pass; park apps show what has reopened.
Indoor things to do in Orlando when it rains
If the whole day looks wet, or you want a break from park tickets, these indoor attractions are built for bad weather. Our guide to things to do in Orlando besides theme parks covers more outdoor ideas for drier days.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
The visitor complex on Merritt Island is one of the best all-day rain plans in the region because its headline exhibits are indoors. Highlights include Space Shuttle Atlantis, displayed with its payload bay doors open as if just undocked from the International Space Station, the Apollo/Saturn V Center, Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex, the Shuttle Launch Experience and Heroes and Legends with the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. The complex lists hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the time of writing.

Plan on roughly 65 to 85 minutes each way by car from downtown Orlando, International Drive or the Disney area in light traffic, longer at rush hour. Walks between buildings and the bus tour involve some time outdoors. If you’d rather stay over, see our guide to hotels near Kennedy Space Center.
Orlando Science Center
The Orlando Science Center at 777 E. Princeton St. in Loch Haven Park has four floors of hands-on exhibit halls plus immersive theaters, including The Dome, a renovated dome theater that reopened in June 2026. At the time of writing it opens 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Wednesdays (except during Orange County public school breaks), Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.

The museum’s on-site garage charges $4 per hour during regular hours, first come, first served. It’s about 20 minutes by car from International Drive and the Universal area outside rush hour.
ICON Park on International Drive
ICON Park at 8375 International Drive is mostly outdoors, but several of its attractions are inside, which makes it handy if you’re staying on I-Drive. Indoor options include Madame Tussauds Orlando, SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium with its 360-degree ocean tunnel, Museum of Illusions Orlando, the 7D Motion Theater and In the Game Arcade with a mirror maze. Its observation wheel and thrill rides are outdoors.

ICON Park says parking is free. For hotels within walking distance, see our picks for the best hotels on International Drive.
WonderWorks Orlando
The upside-down building on International Drive is an indoor “edu-tainment” attraction with more than 100 hands-on exhibits across 28,000 square feet, grouped into zones such as the Disaster Zone and Space Zone. Extras include a glow-in-the-dark indoor ropes course spanning three stories, a laser tag arena, a 4D XD motion theater and the Outta Control Magic Dinner Show with unlimited pizza, salad and drinks.
Crayola Experience Orlando
Crayola Experience sits at The Florida Mall with free parking in front of the entrance. It has 70,000 square feet and more than 20 hands-on attractions, and Crayola recommends 3 to 4 hours. It opens daily at 10 a.m., with last ticket sales an hour before closing. Its programming, such as Toddler Tuesdays, is aimed at families with young children, and you can combine a visit with lunch and shopping in the mall.
Disney Springs
Disney Springs is largely open-air, so it suits showers better than thunderstorms, but it has big indoor stops: the huge World of Disney store, The LEGO Store and many sit-down restaurants. Cirque du Soleil’s Drawn to Life plays in a theater on the West Side; the show has regular dark days and longer dark periods, so check whether performances are scheduled for your dates. Disney says standard self-parking in the Disney Springs garages is complimentary.
Malls, dinner shows and other indoor options
- The Mall at Millenia: 4200 Conroy Road, about a 10-minute drive from Universal Orlando, with Bloomingdale’s among its stores. Listed hours at the time of writing are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
- Medieval Times Orlando: 4510 W. Vine St. in Kissimmee. The show runs about 90 minutes in a climate-controlled indoor castle arena with jousting knights, horses and falconry, and a four-course meal is served during the show.

Hotels that make a rainy day easier
A resort with indoor space, or one within walking distance of shops and restaurants, saves you from driving through a storm. For a wider look at areas, see our guide to where to stay in Orlando.
Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center
Gaylord Palms in Kissimmee is the classic rainy-day hotel. Its 4.5 acres of glass-covered garden atriums are kept at a steady 72 degrees, with winding waterways, gardens and themed areas inspired by Florida regions. Marriott’s pages listed nine on-site restaurants at last check, including Villa de Flora inside the atrium, so you can eat and explore without stepping outside. The Cypress Springs Water Park is outdoors, so save it for drier hours.

Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace
The Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace is an Official Walt Disney World Hotel in the Disney Springs Resort Area, with Disney Springs, as the hotel puts it, right at your doorstep. You can walk to indoor shops and restaurants when a storm hits instead of driving. The hotel also lists an on-site arcade and 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry at the Disney parks every day, which helps you get outdoor rides done before the clouds build.

Hurricane season and your Orlando trip
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. The National Hurricane Center puts the statistical peak around September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Most trips see nothing worse than afternoon storms, but know your options before you pay.
- Disney: At last check, Walt Disney World’s hurricane policy said that if the National Hurricane Center issues a hurricane warning for the Orlando area, or for your place of residence, within 7 days of your scheduled arrival, you can reschedule or cancel a Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort Hotel package or most room-only reservations booked directly with Disney without Disney change or cancellation fees. It doesn’t cover certain special events or dining experiences, and airlines, car rentals, insurers and other third parties keep their own rules.
- Universal and other hotels: terms vary by ticket, package and hotel, so read your cancellation terms and favor free-cancellation rates in late summer and early fall.
- Travel insurance: if you buy it, read how the policy treats named storms and when you need to buy it for a storm to be covered.
If a storm threatens, follow local officials and your hotel’s instructions; park closures are announced on the parks’ official sites and apps.

Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Orlando on a rainy day?
Ride the indoor attractions at Disney, Universal or SeaWorld, or spend the day at an indoor attraction such as Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, the Orlando Science Center, WonderWorks, Crayola Experience or ICON Park’s Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE Aquarium. Malls like The Mall at Millenia and dinner shows like Medieval Times are good evening options. Most summer rain comes as afternoon storms, so you can often mix indoor and outdoor plans.
Do Disney and Universal close when it rains?
The theme parks almost never close for ordinary rain. Indoor rides, shows and restaurants keep running, while outdoor rides, especially coasters and water rides, can pause when lightning or strong wind is nearby and reopen once it passes. Water parks are more sensitive: Disney warns its water parks can close for inclement weather, sometimes with little notice, and Universal has said Volcano Bay stays closed all day if it closes for weather.
What is the rainiest time of year in Orlando?
Orlando’s rainy season typically runs from late May to mid-October. The National Weather Service puts the median start in Orlando around May 27 and the median start of the dry season around October 15. During these months, afternoon thunderstorms are common, often building after midday. Winter and spring are much drier, with only a few rainy days in some months.
Does SeaWorld Orlando give a rain check?
Yes, through its Weather-or-Not Assurance. If weather closes the park early or cuts its hours, if rides are shut for more than 60 minutes because of lightning, wind, heat or rain, or if the heat index reaches 110 degrees, you can request a free return visit within one week. Annual passes, complimentary tickets, Discovery Cove tickets and some packages are excluded, so check the current terms.
Should I avoid Orlando during hurricane season?
Not necessarily. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and most trips in those months only see afternoon storms. The risk peaks from mid-August to mid-October. If you book then, choose refundable rates, read your hotel’s and airline’s cancellation terms, and note that Disney’s hurricane policy lets you change or cancel eligible Disney bookings if a hurricane warning is issued within 7 days of arrival.
Bottom line
Rain in Orlando is usually a two-hour problem, not a lost day. Do outdoor rides early, save indoor favorites for the afternoon, keep Kennedy Space Center or an I-Drive indoor attraction as your all-day backup and, if you expect wet weather, stay somewhere with indoor space or walkable shops and dining, like Gaylord Palms or the Disney Springs Resort Area.
