The most useful Universal Orlando tips for a first visit are about rules, not secrets: which ticket gets you on the Hogwarts Express, where Universal Express works, why your phone goes into a locker before the big coasters, and what the Universal Orlando Resort app does. Get those right and you’ll spend less of your day in lines.
Universal Orlando Resort has four parks: Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe (open since May 22, 2025) and the Volcano Bay water park, plus the CityWalk district. The rules below come from Universal’s own pages, checked in early October 2026. Prices, hours and ride lists change often, so confirm them for your dates.
Quick answer: Buy Park-to-Park if you want to ride the Hogwarts Express. Decide on Universal Express before you arrive, because it can sell out and doesn’t cover Hagrid’s or Dragon Racer’s Rally. Travel light, since loose items aren’t allowed on most big rides. Set up the app with your tickets and a payment method for Virtual Line and mobile ordering. Universal hotels add Early Park Admission, and Hard Rock, Portofino Bay and Royal Pacific add free Express Unlimited at the two original parks.

Prices below are Universal’s lowest one-day “from” prices per person, plus tax, on its US ticket page in late September 2026 (unchanged at our early October check). They vary by date.
| Park | Known for | 1-day from | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal Studios Florida | Diagon Alley, Gringotts | $124.99 | Closes early on Halloween Horror Nights |
| Islands of Adventure | Hogsmeade, Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster | $124.99 | Had early entry on dates we checked |
| Epic Universe | Five worlds, incl. Super Nintendo World | $139.99 | Separate site and parking lot |
| Volcano Bay | Water park, Krakatau Aqua Coaster | $80.99 | Closes Oct 26, 2026 until spring 2027 |
Epic Universe’s worlds are Celestial Park, Super Nintendo World, Ministry of Magic, Isle of Berk and Dark Universe. For ride-by-ride planning, see our Epic Universe guide.
Ticket tips: Park-to-Park, the Hogwarts Express and Epic Universe
The Hogwarts Express runs between King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure. Universal requires Park-to-Park admission to board, so a one-park-per-day ticket won’t get you on the train. Children under 48 inches need a supervising companion.

- Park-to-Park includes Epic: Park-to-Park lets you move between parks on the same day, and Universal sells it for every park, including Epic Universe.
- No need to pick your Epic day: On multi-day tickets you choose only the first day, then visit any park on the ticket, Epic included, on any day within the validity window.
- Small children: Universal’s FAQ says children 2 and under don’t need a ticket.
- Changing dates: Tickets are non-refundable, but most can be moved to another date; you pay any price difference.
- Watch for offers: In late September 2026, Universal’s US ticket page advertised two free days with a three-day ticket; by early October it was promoting a special 3-Day ticket (one day each at Epic Universe, Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure) that isn’t valid on the Hogwarts Express. Check what’s running for your dates.
If you’re short on time, Universal’s own FAQ suggests starting with Universal Studios Florida, then Islands of Adventure, and adding Epic Universe or Volcano Bay if you want something new or a water park day.
How Universal Express really works
Universal Express gets you into a separate, shorter line at participating rides. It never replaces park admission, and it comes in three versions:
| Version | How often per ride | Where | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal Express | Once | Studios, Islands, Epic (and Volcano Bay) | Online ahead or in the park |
| Express Unlimited | As often as you like | Studios and Islands only | Buy it, or free at 3 hotels |
| Express Now | Once, in a set time window | Select rides, when offered | In the app, inside the park, same day |
- Rides it doesn’t cover: Universal says Express and Express Unlimited aren’t valid on Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Pteranodon Flyers or Epic Universe’s Dragon Racer’s Rally. There, the regular line or an early arrival is your only option.
- Epic Universe limits: Express Unlimited isn’t sold for or valid at Epic Universe, and there’s no Express After 4PM pass there. Regular Universal Express covers most Epic rides.
- Price: At the time of writing, a one-park Express pass ran from $119.99 to $319.99 per person plus tax, depending on the date.
- Buy early: Universal says in-park Express has limited inventory and often sells out.
- Not for Halloween Horror Nights: Daytime Express, including the hotel perk, isn’t valid at the event, which sells its own Express pass.
Express Unlimited comes free with a stay at Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort. Each guest shows their own room key card, and it works only at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. To weigh that perk against buying passes, see our comparison of Universal hotels with Express Pass.
Lockers, loose items and metal detectors
Universal’s rider guide says loose articles such as phones, cameras, umbrellas and keys are prohibited on most attractions: leave them with a non-rider or in a locker. At the headline rides, standard-size lockers are free while you ride, and larger ones cost extra.
| Ride | Park | Minimum height | Loose-item rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure | Islands | 48 in | Free ride locker; no Express |
| Jurassic World VelociCoaster | Islands | 51 in | Free locker; metal detector |
| The Incredible Hulk Coaster | Islands | 54 in | Free locker; metal detector |
| Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey | Islands | 48 in | Free ride locker |
| Escape from Gringotts | Studios | 42 in | Free ride locker |
| Revenge of the Mummy | Studios | 48 in | Free ride locker |
| Stardust Racers | Epic | 48 in | Free locker; metal detector |
| Monsters Unchained | Epic | 48 in | Free ride locker |
| Hiccup’s Wing Gliders | Epic | 40 in | Free ride locker |
Men in Black Alien Attack at Universal Studios Florida also has free ride lockers. A few practical points:
- Metal detectors mean empty pockets: At VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster and Stardust Racers, you walk through a metal detector before boarding, and nothing loose is allowed past it.
- Water rides charge for lockers: The lockers at Jurassic Park River Adventure, Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges and Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls have a fee.
- All-day lockers cost extra: Universal rents lockers near the entrances of Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, including family-size lockers at Universal Studios Florida and Epic Universe. Prices are posted at each locker area.

Heights come from Universal’s ride-height page and rider guides. A small bag and one phone per group make the locker stop quicker.
Single Rider and Child Swap
Universal offers Single Rider lines at select attractions, subject to availability and change without notice; its pages for Escape from Gringotts and Forbidden Journey list it. If your group doesn’t mind riding apart, look for the Single Rider sign at the entrance and ask whether it’s open.
Child Swap lets parents of small children take turns: one adult waits with the child while the rest of the group rides, then they trade places. Ask the attendant at the ride entrance how it works there. Our guide to Orlando with toddlers has more on heights, strollers and rest breaks.
Set up the Universal Orlando Resort app before you go
Before your trip, sign in to the free Universal Orlando Resort app with a Universal account, link your tickets or passes to the account wallet and set up your travel party. Several features need those steps.
- Virtual Line: You pick a return time instead of standing in line. Universal says it can cover select rides and shows, plus access to Epic Universe’s worlds; the app shows what’s using it that day. You must be inside that park, only your app travel party can share the time, and it isn’t confirmed until the success screen appears. In October 2026, Universal noted the system was in a technical rehearsal, so some elements might not be available.
- Mobile food and drink ordering: Order at select restaurants in the parks and CityWalk, then tap “Prepare my order” when you arrive. You collect at a counter or window, or get table delivery, and you can add a food allergy note.
- Express Now: These one-ride time slots can only be bought in the app, inside the park, on the day.
- Everything else: Wait times and showtimes on an interactive map, tickets and passes stored in your account wallet, Universal Pay at select locations, dining reservations and a note of where you parked.
Get there early: Early Park Admission and the hours calendar
Guests at all 11 Universal Orlando hotels get Early Park Admission to select attractions up to an hour before regular opening. You still need a valid ticket, and Universal picks the parks each day. On October 5, 2026, for example, the calendar showed early entry at 8 a.m. at Islands of Adventure (opening 9 a.m.), 9 a.m. at Epic Universe (opening 10 a.m.) and 9:30 a.m. at Volcano Bay, but none at Universal Studios Florida. Our guide to Universal Early Park Admission explains who qualifies and how to use that hour.
Check the official hours calendar for each day of your trip. Two things stand out this fall:
- Halloween Horror Nights: The event runs at Universal Studios Florida on select nights from August 28 to November 1, 2026 (Wednesdays through Sundays, plus Monday, October 12). It needs a separate ticket and isn’t recommended for children under 13. On the event days we checked, the park closed to daytime guests at 5 p.m., versus 7 p.m. on Monday, October 5.
- Temporary closures: Listed under the calendar. At the time of writing: Jurassic Park River Adventure through December 16, 2026; the Hogwarts Express on November 4, 2026; Forbidden Journey from February 8 to 19, 2027; and Animal Actors On Location!, closing permanently on November 3, 2026.
Volcano Bay closes for maintenance on October 26, 2026. Universal’s ticket and hours pages give a planned reopening on or before April 1, 2027, but one section of its Express page still says on or before March 24, 2027, so check again before you buy. For warm-weather alternatives, see our Orlando water parks guide.
Security, bags and outside food
Everyone goes through metal detection, and bags are subject to X-ray or inspection before you enter CityWalk or the parks. Universal’s policies page lists what you can’t bring in:
- Outside food and drinks: Not allowed, except bottled water (up to 2 liters per guest), food needed for medical reasons or special diets, and baby food or formula. Food can’t need heating or refrigeration.
- Coolers: Only soft-sided coolers smaller than 8.5 by 6 by 6 inches.
- Other banned items: Glass, suitcases or bags with wheels, folding chairs, alcohol and non-mobility powered or remote-control devices.
- CityWalk curfew for teens: At last check, guests under 18 without park admission had to leave by 8 p.m. unless they’re with a parent or guardian aged 21 or older, staying at a Universal hotel or holding certain reservations.
Parking and getting between the parks
Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, Volcano Bay and CityWalk share the parking garages at 6000 Universal Boulevard. Epic Universe has its own surface lot at 1001 Epic Boulevard, roughly 3.5 to 5 miles by road from the main garages, depending on your route and where you park (our OSRM estimate). Plan for that drive when park-hopping.
- Price: At last check, Universal’s parking page listed regular self-parking at $35 including tax, both prepaid and at the toll plaza, with Prime parking at $50 to $60. An older ticket-page offer of $3 off for prepaying was gone by early October.
- Free evening parking: Self-parking is free after 6 p.m., except on Halloween Horror Nights event nights and New Year’s Eve, and not at Epic Universe. Handy for a CityWalk dinner.
- Same-day re-entry: Parking is valid all day, including at the other parking location, with your receipt or QR code and a photo ID.
- Volcano Bay: Day guests follow signs to the Volcano Bay section of the garage and take a free shuttle to the entrance.
- Rideshare and taxis: Drop-off and pickup are free. For the original parks, use the North Parking Garage at 6000 Universal Boulevard. For Epic Universe, use 1201 Epic Boulevard.
Universal hotels add free transportation: water taxis to CityWalk from Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, Royal Pacific and Sapphire Falls, shuttle buses from every hotel and walking paths from most. Universal’s blog puts most trips at 10 to 20 minutes.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a Park-to-Park ticket to ride the Hogwarts Express?
Yes. Universal requires Park-to-Park admission to board the Hogwarts Express between King’s Cross Station in Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure. A one-park-per-day ticket doesn’t include it, even if you visit both parks on different days. Annual passes with park-to-park admission to both parks also work. Children under 48 inches need a supervising companion on the train.
Is Universal Express worth it on a first visit?
It helps most on busy dates and short trips. It doesn’t help at Hagrid’s, Pteranodon Flyers or Dragon Racer’s Rally, where it isn’t valid. A one-park pass ran from $119.99 to $319.99 per person plus tax at the time of writing. If you’d buy it for several people, compare that with a night at Hard Rock Hotel, Portofino Bay or Royal Pacific, where Express Unlimited is included.
Are Universal Orlando ride lockers free?
The standard-size lockers at the headline rides are free while you ride. That includes Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster, Hulk, Forbidden Journey, Gringotts, Revenge of the Mummy, Men in Black, Stardust Racers, Monsters Unchained and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders. Larger ride lockers, the lockers at water rides and all-day lockers near the park entrances cost extra. Prices are posted at each locker area.
Can you bring food and drinks into Universal Orlando?
Mostly no. Universal allows bottled water (up to 2 liters per guest), food needed for medical reasons or special diets, and baby food or formula. That food can’t need heating or refrigeration. Only soft-sided coolers smaller than 8.5 by 6 by 6 inches are allowed, and glass is banned. Mobile ordering in the app can shorten meal stops.
Does Universal Express work at Epic Universe?
Regular Universal Express does. Universal says most Epic Universe attractions accept it, except Dragon Racer’s Rally. Express Unlimited isn’t sold for or valid at Epic, and that includes the free Express Unlimited from Hard Rock, Portofino Bay and Royal Pacific. There’s no Express After 4PM pass at Epic either. Hotel guests can still use Early Park Admission there on scheduled days.
Bottom line
The best Universal Orlando tips come down to preparation. Buy Park-to-Park if the Hogwarts Express matters to you, settle the Express question before you arrive, carry as little as possible, and set up the app before your first morning. Then check the hours calendar for Halloween Horror Nights dates, Early Park Admission and closures. If you’d rather skip regular lines at the original parks without buying passes, a stay at Hard Rock Hotel, Portofino Bay or Royal Pacific includes Express Unlimited.
