Planning Orlando with teens is a different trip from planning one with small kids: height limits stop mattering, ticket prices jump to the adult rate, and the big questions become which coasters to ride, whether your teens can explore on their own and how to fit everyone into one room without fights over the bathroom.

Below are the thrill rides teens travel for, the official rules on tickets, solo time and Halloween Horror Nights, and hotel rooms with real separation. We checked everything on official pages in early October 2026; rules change, so confirm before you book.

Quick answer: For thrill-seeking teens, Universal Orlando is the stronger pick, with VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s and Epic Universe’s Stardust Racers. Disney still has TRON, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Both resorts charge adult prices from age 10. At Disney, guests under 14 can’t enter a park without someone 14 or older. Universal doesn’t recommend Halloween Horror Nights for kids under 13. Book a room with a separate space and a split bathroom, such as a Cabana Bay family suite or a two-room suite.

Disney or Universal for teens?

Most teens lean toward Universal, with more intense coasters, Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. Disney wins on nighttime shows, Star Wars and variety, so it suits families with a younger sibling or a teen who prefers immersive rides to big drops.

With five days or more, many families split the trip. Our full Disney vs Universal comparison breaks down tickets, line-skipping and hotel perks side by side.

Best rides for teens in Orlando

These are the rides teens usually rank highest, with minimum heights from the parks’ official pages at the time of writing. Most teenagers clear every minimum; nerves are another matter, so start milder on day one.

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure

Islands of Adventure is the teen park: VelociCoaster, Hulk, Doctor Doom’s Fearfall (52 inches) and Hagrid’s sit within a short walk of each other. Hagrid’s isn’t part of Universal Express, so ride it early or expect a long standby line. Next door at Universal Studios Florida, Escape from Gringotts and Revenge of the Mummy are the big ones. Fast & Furious – Supercharged has closed, and Jurassic Park River Adventure is due to reopen on December 17, 2026.

VelociCoaster and Hulk use metal detectors, so phones and loose items go in lockers or with a non-rider. See our Universal Orlando tips for first-timers.

Epic Universe

Universal’s newest park, open since May 22, 2025, is built around Celestial Park and four themed worlds. For teens, the must-dos are Stardust Racers, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, Mine-Cart Madness and Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge. Stardust Racers also uses a metal detector. Dragon Racer’s Rally (48 inches) isn’t part of Universal Express. Our Epic Universe guide covers tickets, Express and every ride height.

Walt Disney World

Disney’s thrill list is shorter but strong: TRON and Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom, Cosmic Rewind and Test Track at EPCOT, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror and Rise of the Resistance at Hollywood Studios, and Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom. Five headliners, including TRON, Cosmic Rewind, Rise of the Resistance and Flight of Passage, aren’t in Lightning Lane Multi Pass and need a Single Pass (or Premier Pass) if you want to skip the line.

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld is an easy add-on for coaster fans: Mako, Kraken, Manta and Pipeline: The Surf Coaster need 54 inches and Ice Breaker 48 inches at the time of writing.

Tickets: teens pay adult prices from age 10

Disney’s child prices cover ages 3 to 9, and Universal’s ticket store sells child tickets for ages 3 to 9 and adult tickets from 10. A 13-year-old costs the same as a parent at both resorts.

ResortChild priceAdult price from1-day ticket from
Walt Disney WorldAges 3 to 9Age 10$119 plus tax
Universal (Studios or Islands)Ages 3 to 9Age 10$124.99 plus tax
Universal Epic UniverseAges 3 to 9Age 10$139.99 plus tax

Prices vary by date. At the time of writing, Universal also sold a promotional 3-day ticket with one day at each of its three theme parks from $297 plus tax, used within seven days, with blockout dates around Christmas, Presidents’ Day week and late March 2027. It doesn’t include the Hogwarts Express, which needs a Park-to-Park ticket.

Can teens go to Disney or Universal without an adult?

The official rules we found:

  • Disney parks: Disney’s property rules say guests under 14 must be accompanied by a guest 14 or older to enter a theme park or water park, and children under 7 must ride with someone 14 or older. A 14-year-old can therefore enter on their own, and can bring along a younger sibling.
  • Universal parks: Universal’s FAQ pages don’t publish a minimum age for entering its theme parks alone. On rides, its rider safety guide requires a Supervising Companion aged 14 or older for children under 48 inches. If your teen is under 14, call Universal before you plan solo time.
  • Universal CityWalk evenings: Universal’s policy page says guests under 18 without theme park admission (or a ticket to a separately ticketed event) must leave at 8 p.m. The exceptions are teens with a parent or guardian 21 or older, Universal hotel guests, and teens with a CityWalk restaurant reservation or tickets for Hollywood Drive-In Golf or Universal’s Great Movie Escape. One adult can accompany up to five under-18s, and Universal can change the time.
  • Costumes at Disney: guests 14 and older can’t wear costumes in Disney’s theme parks and water parks, and masks aren’t allowed from age 14 unless medically required (separately ticketed events have their own rules).

Before you split up, agree on a meeting point and check-in time.

Halloween Horror Nights and teens

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida is a big draw for older teens, but Universal’s event page carries a clear warning: the event may be too intense for young children and isn’t recommended for children under 13. Costumes and costume masks aren’t allowed. In 2026 it runs on select nights from August 28 to November 1 and needs its own ticket; a regular day ticket doesn’t get you in, and the free Express from Universal’s top hotels doesn’t cover it.

For a 13- or 14-year-old new to haunted houses, one night with a parent is a sensible start.

Line-skipping tricks teens appreciate

  • Single Rider at Universal: Universal offers Single Rider lines at select attractions, subject to availability; the ride pages for Escape from Gringotts and Forbidden Journey list it. If your teens don’t mind splitting up for a ride, this is the cheapest way to cut waits.
  • Universal Express: at the time of writing, a one-time-per-ride Express pass for one park started at $119.99 per person plus tax. Guests of Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay and Loews Royal Pacific get Express Unlimited free at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure (not Epic Universe or Volcano Bay).
  • Early entry: Universal hotel guests get Early Park Admission up to an hour before opening at select attractions. From October 5 to November 30, 2026, Universal lists it at Islands of Adventure only, with Hagrid’s, VelociCoaster, Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff among the rides, which is ideal for teens. Disney Resort hotel guests and those at select other hotels get 30 minutes of Early Theme Park Entry every day, and Cosmic Rewind, Rise of the Resistance, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest are on Disney’s planned list.
  • Disney Lightning Lane: guests of Disney Resort hotels can buy passes 7 days before check-in; most other guests buy 3 days ahead.

Hotel rooms that work for families with teens

Teens take up adult-sized space and need the bathroom when everyone else does. Look for:

  • A second sleeping area: a two-room suite, a kids’ room or a sofa bed in a separate living room.
  • A split or second bathroom: a compartmentalized bathroom or two full baths saves a lot of morning stress.
  • Real beds: count beds, not just the occupancy limit; a 6-foot teen on a pull-out sofa for a week is a hard sell.
  • Food: free breakfast, an evening snack hour or a kitchen makes a big difference to the bill when teens eat like adults.
  • Age rules: booking a second room for the teens? Universal hotels require at least one guest 21 or older in each reserved room, and Drury requires guests to be 18 to reserve, so check before you book.

Our guides to rooms that sleep 5 or 6 at Disney World and Universal and Orlando hotels with kids suites go deeper. These four hotels fit teens well. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book.

Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando

For a Universal-heavy trip, Hard Rock guests get free Universal Express Unlimited at participating rides in Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, Early Park Admission and a short walk or water taxi to CityWalk and both original parks. Standard rooms have two queen beds and sleep up to five, with a bathroom split into separate bath and vanity areas. The Future Rock Star Suite pairs a king bedroom with an attached room with two twin beds, sleeping up to five with a rollaway. At our last check there was no resort fee, but overnight self-parking was $36 plus tax.

Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort

Cabana Bay is the value pick with the most teen appeal: its 430-square-foot Family Suites sleep up to six (two queen beds and a pull-out sofa), with a sliding privacy partition, a kitchenette and a compartmentalized bathroom that lets three people get ready at once. There’s also a two-bedroom suite that sleeps up to eight. The resort has Galaxy Bowl, a bowling alley with its own restaurant, plus two big pools, Early Park Admission, free shuttle buses and walking paths to the parks. Express isn’t included.

Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando – Disney Springs Area

For a Disney-focused trip on a budget, the Drury helps with the food bill: a free hot breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. and the free 5:30 Kickback with hot food and drinks from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., plus free popcorn and soda in the lobby and a 24-hour arcade. Two-room suites put the bedroom behind a door, with a pull-out queen sofa in the living area, and the hotel allows up to six people in a suite. It’s on Disney’s Early Theme Park Entry list, runs a free hourly shuttle to all four Disney theme parks and charges no resort fee; self-parking is $28 per night.

Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek

When teens want their own bedroom, Club Wyndham’s two-bedroom Presidential suites have two bathrooms (listed for up to four guests), and its two-bedroom Deluxe units sleep up to eight with a king, two double beds and a sleeper sofa (bathroom count varies). Every unit has a full kitchen. The resort lists a lazy river, arcade games, mini golf and pickleball, and sits in the gated Bonnet Creek area about 3 to 3.5 miles by road from Hollywood Studios. You’ll want a car: it lists no Disney shuttle and isn’t on Disney’s Early Entry list. Self-parking is $20 per vehicle per day for non-owners. The Tower 5 pool and lazy river closed for renovation on September 12, 2026; both Wyndham sites now list them as closed until December 1, 2026, so ask what’s open.

Prefer a Disney-owned resort? In October 2026, Disney listed the Family Suites at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort as sleeping up to six; they’re booked directly with Disney.

Budget tips for Orlando with teens

  • Count every teen as an adult when you price tickets, Express and dining plans.
  • Use Single Rider at Universal before paying for Express, unless you’re staying at a hotel that includes it.
  • Feed them at the hotel: free breakfast or a kitchen covers one or two meals a day.
  • Plan a park-free day: a beach or an evening on International Drive costs less than another ticket.
  • Watch seasonal closures: Volcano Bay closes for maintenance on October 26, 2026, with reopening planned on or before April 1, 2027, and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is temporarily closed.

Beyond the theme parks

Teens tired of queues often enjoy an evening on International Drive, where ICON Park has The Orlando Eye observation wheel, SEA LIFE Orlando and Madame Tussauds; see our hotels near ICON Park to stay within walking distance. Frequently asked questions

Is Disney or Universal better for teenagers?

Universal usually wins for teens who want thrills: VelociCoaster, Hulk, Hagrid’s, Stardust Racers and Monsters Unchained are among Orlando’s most intense rides, and Harry Potter is found only there. Disney is better if your teen loves Star Wars, Marvel’s Cosmic Rewind, nighttime shows or immersive rides, or if younger siblings are coming. With five days or more, splitting the trip between the two works well.

What age is an adult ticket at Disney World and Universal?

Both resorts charge adult prices from age 10. Disney’s child prices cover ages 3 to 9, and Universal’s ticket store sells child tickets for ages 3 to 9 and adult tickets from 10. At the time of writing, a Disney 1-day ticket started at $119 plus tax, and Universal’s at $124.99 plus tax ($139.99 for Epic Universe). Prices vary by date.

Can a 14-year-old go to Disney World alone?

Disney’s property rules say guests under 14 must be accompanied by someone 14 or older to enter a theme park or water park, so a 14-year-old meets that rule. Children under 7 must ride attractions with someone 14 or older. Make sure your teen has a valid ticket, a charged phone with the Disney app and a plan to meet you, and check the rules again before you go.

Is Halloween Horror Nights OK for a 13-year-old?

Universal says the event may be too intense for young children and doesn’t recommend it for children under 13, so a 13-year-old is at the lower edge of its guidance. The houses feature gore and loud jump scares. If your teen is unsure, go together, start with one or two houses and keep the night short. It needs a separate ticket and runs on select nights.

Which Orlando hotel rooms are best for families with teens?

Look for a second sleeping area and a split or second bathroom. Universal’s Cabana Bay Family Suites sleep six and have a compartmentalized bathroom. Hard Rock’s Future Rock Star Suite adds an attached room, and Drury’s two-room suites put the bedroom behind a door. For separate bedrooms with two bathrooms, consider a two-bedroom condo suite such as those at Club Wyndham Bonnet Creek.

Bottom line

Orlando with teens works best when you lean into the thrills: plan at least two Universal days for VelociCoaster, Hagrid’s and Epic Universe, add Disney’s headliners if you have time, and budget for adult tickets from age 10. Agree on solo-time rules before you go and pick a room with breathing space. For a Universal-focused trip, check availability at Universal Cabana Bay Beach Resort, or compare the other picks above.
