International Drive vs Lake Buena Vista comes down to the parks you will visit most. Lake Buena Vista puts you about 5 to 8.5 road miles from the four Disney theme parks, and eight of its hotels, by Disney Springs, get Disney’s Early Theme Park Entry. Central International Drive puts you about 2.5 to 4.5 miles from Universal Orlando and Epic Universe, with ICON Park, Pointe Orlando and a $2 trolley near the door.

Both areas are in Orange County, so the hotel tax is the same 12.5%. Below we compare drive times, park perks, transport and evenings, with three hotel picks per area, all checked in October 2026. Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book. For all of Orlando’s main areas, see our guide to where to stay in Orlando.

Quick answer: Choose Lake Buena Vista if Walt Disney World is most of your trip, ideally a hotel on Hotel Plaza Boulevard with 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry and a walk to Disney Springs. Choose International Drive if Universal, Epic Universe or SeaWorld come first, or if you want restaurants and a trolley within walking distance. If your days are split evenly, south I-Drive sits between the two.

What each area actually is

International Drive: Universal’s side of town

Visit Orlando, the official tourism site, calls I-Drive the International Drive Entertainment District, close to Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando. The I-RIDE Trolley’s Red Line follows it from Orlando International Premium Outlets in the north, past Sand Lake Road, ICON Park, Pointe Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center, to SeaWorld and Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets in the south. The I-Drive Business Improvement District’s site advertises about 300 restaurants and 600 stores.

Universal’s parks are a short drive from I-Drive, not on it. The north and central stretches are closest to Universal’s original parks, the convention center stretch to Epic Universe, and the south end to Disney.

ICON Park lists more than 50 shops, restaurants and attractions with free parking, led by The Orlando Eye, a 400-foot observation wheel per Visit Orlando.

Lake Buena Vista: Disney’s doorstep

In hotel listings, “Lake Buena Vista” covers two places. The first is the cluster on Hotel Plaza Boulevard next to Disney Springs. The Disney Springs Resort Area hotels’ site calls them Official Walt Disney World Hotels located in the Walt Disney World Resort and within walking distance of Disney Springs. Their addresses read Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830.

The second is the strip of hotels, timeshare resorts and outlets just outside Disney, along Apopka-Vineland Road (SR 535) and Palm Parkway. Many use “Lake Buena Vista” in their names, but their addresses usually say Orlando, and they do not get Disney’s hotel perks.

The two areas meet near I-4: Floridays Resort Orlando, on south I-Drive, is about 4 road miles from Disney Springs.

Road distances from each area to the parks

We routed from four typical spots, using one of our picks at each: Embassy Suites ICON Park, Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando, Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista and Rosen Inn Lake Buena Vista.

These are OpenStreetMap road routes (OSRM and Valhalla) on public roads: to Magic Kingdom’s Transportation and Ticket Center lot, EPCOT’s main lot, the Lime Garage at Disney Springs, the airport’s Terminals A and B and the other parks’ toll plazas. Ranges cover both directions; the drive back from Disney Springs to I-Drive can be 2 to 4.5 miles longer.

Without traffic, Disney parks took about 15 to 25 minutes from central I-Drive and 12 to 20 from Lake Buena Vista; Universal took 8 to 13 minutes from I-Drive and 13 to 20 from Lake Buena Vista. I-4 traffic, parking and security add more. From Floridays, Universal is about 6.5 to 8 miles.

Early Theme Park Entry and other park perks

Disney gives 30 minutes of Early Theme Park Entry at all four theme parks, every day of your stay, to guests of Disney Resort hotels and 15 “Other Select Hotels”. Disney says it continues through 2027, and you still need valid park admission. Eight of the 15 sit on or beside Hotel Plaza Boulevard:

  • DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Orlando
  • Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando Lake Buena Vista
  • Hilton Orlando Buena Vista Palace
  • Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista
  • Holiday Inn Orlando
  • Renaissance Orlando Resort and Spa
  • Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista
  • Wyndham Lake Buena Vista

No hotel on International Drive, Palm Parkway or SR 535 is on the list. The eight do not get Extended Evening Hours or the 7-day Lightning Lane window; their guests buy Lightning Lane passes 3 days ahead. See our list of non-Disney hotels with Early Theme Park Entry and our Disney Springs Resort Area hotels comparison.

At Universal, Early Park Admission is for guests of Universal’s own hotels and other selected groups. I-Drive’s Universal Partner Hotels list other perks, such as free scheduled transportation to Universal’s parks and discounts at select Universal locations.

Getting around without a car

  • I-RIDE Trolley (I-Drive only): daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., $2 a ride, with passes from $8 a day (not sold on board). The Red Line comes about every 20 minutes. It does not go to Universal’s parks, Epic Universe or Walt Disney World. See our I-RIDE Trolley guide.
  • LYNX buses (both areas): $2 a ride or $4.50 a day. Link 350 connects the convention center area with the Disney Springs area.
  • Disney shuttles from Hotel Plaza Boulevard: the area hotels advertise buses to all four Disney theme parks. At Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista, the operator, Fabulous Buses, takes reservations up to 48 hours ahead and runs from 90 minutes before opening to 60 minutes after closing.
  • Disney shuttles from I-Drive: at the I-Drive hotels we checked, Disney runs are fewer, usually one or two a day per park, and some are paid. Free Universal shuttles are more common. Compare them in our list of International Drive hotels with a Disney shuttle.
  • Airport: the Mears Connect shared shuttle serves Disney Resort hotels and the Disney Springs Resort Area hotels, not I-Drive. From the airport, it costs $17.60 per adult and $14.30 per child aged 3 to 9 one way, plus a 6% fuel surcharge, at the time of writing.

If you drive, Disney charges $35 a day for standard theme park parking, and Disney Springs parking is free. Universal charges $35 a day, tax included, at the time of writing.

Dining and evenings: ICON Park vs Disney Springs

From most central I-Drive hotels, you can walk to dinner. Besides ICON Park, Pointe Orlando’s directory includes Regal Cinemas, Main Event, The Capital Grille and Maggiano’s Little Italy. Restaurant Row, on West Sand Lake Road, is a short drive west, and Visit Orlando counts more than two dozen restaurants there. Both outlet malls are on the trolley line.

In Lake Buena Vista, the evening plan is Disney Springs. Visit Orlando describes four neighborhoods with more than 150 restaurants, shops and activities, free admission and free covered parking, and Disney’s page lists Cirque du Soleil and the Aerophile balloon. Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets and the Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores are close to the SR 535 hotels.

The free Universal shuttle is booked 24 hours ahead at the hotel and, at the time of writing, leaves between 7:20 and 11:50 a.m. Disney is a paid Fabulous Buses ticket, with one run each to Magic Kingdom and EPCOT; the hotel’s page gives two sets of times, so check yours. Our Rosen Inn comparison covers all four inns.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Orlando International Drive ICON Park

This all-suite hotel at 8250 Jamaican Court is about 0.5 mile on foot from ICON Park. After a renovation that finished in 2026, its 246 suites each have a bedroom with a door and a separate living room. On Booking.com, king suites sleep 4 and two-queen suites sleep 6. Hilton lists a free made-to-order breakfast and an evening reception.

Booking.com showed no resort fee and lists parking at US$23 a day (Hilton listed $24.50 including tax). Booking.com calls the shuttle to Walt Disney World, Universal and Epic Universe free, but a Hilton summary called it paid, so confirm it. Platinum Transportation’s October 5, 2026 schedule shows one run to Universal and Epic Universe (8:55 a.m.) and one to EPCOT (9:55 a.m.). See our Embassy Suites Orlando International Drive review.

Best for: families of four to six who want a separate bedroom and breakfast included.

Booking.com shows the same US$35, but one FAQ answer still says $30. The shuttle, run by SSS Luxury Transportation, serves EPCOT, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Universal, Epic Universe and SeaWorld. Book seats ahead; the operator’s system shows no Magic Kingdom run. Booking.com lists a minimum check-in age of 21. See our Floridays Resort Orlando review.

Best for: large families splitting their days between Disney and Universal.

Booking.com’s fine print lists a US$41 resort fee plus taxes per night, covering internet, the Disney shuttle, breakfast for children 5 and under and a $10 arcade card. See our Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista review.

Best for: Disney-first families who want Early Entry and Disney Springs on foot.

At 8442 Palm Parkway, this inn has the same price formula as the Pointe Orlando inn: no resort fees and $10 parking, capped at $50. Kids get Ozzie’s Splash Zone, a playground and two seasonally heated pools.

Frequently asked questions

Is International Drive or Lake Buena Vista better for Disney World?

Lake Buena Vista. Our routes put Hotel Plaza Boulevard about 5 to 7.5 miles from the Disney theme park lots, against about 11.5 to 14.5 miles from central I-Drive. Eight hotels on or beside Hotel Plaza Boulevard also get 30-minute Early Theme Park Entry, and no I-Drive hotel does.

Is International Drive or Lake Buena Vista better for Universal Orlando?

International Drive. Universal’s garages are about 2.5 to 4.5 road miles from central I-Drive, and Epic Universe about 3 to 3.5 miles. From Lake Buena Vista, Universal is about 7.5 to 11 miles. Several I-Drive hotels, such as Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando, are Universal Partner Hotels with free scheduled shuttles.

Can you walk to Disney Springs from Lake Buena Vista hotels?

Only from the hotels on Hotel Plaza Boulevard. Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista has a skybridge, and our foot route to the Marketplace was about 0.3 mile. Hotels on Palm Parkway and SR 535 are about 2 to 4 road miles away, so most guests drive or take a rideshare. Parking at Disney Springs is free.

Do you need a car on International Drive or in Lake Buena Vista?

Not always. On I-Drive, the I-RIDE Trolley, LYNX buses and Universal shuttles cover most trips, but Disney service is limited. On Hotel Plaza Boulevard, hotels run Disney shuttles, and Mears Connect reaches them from the airport. On Palm Parkway or SR 535, a car or rideshare helps, especially for Magic Kingdom days.

Is Lake Buena Vista part of Walt Disney World?

Partly. The Hotel Plaza Boulevard hotels describe themselves as located in the Walt Disney World Resort and are Official Walt Disney World Hotels with Early Entry, but they are not Disney-owned, so Booking.com sells them. Many hotels with “Lake Buena Vista” in their names sit outside Disney property, on Palm Parkway or SR 535.

Bottom line

International Drive vs Lake Buena Vista is really Universal vs Disney. Book Hotel Plaza Boulevard for Disney-first trips with Early Entry and a walk to Disney Springs, central I-Drive for Universal, Epic Universe and walkable evenings, and south I-Drive for one base for both. Compare rates for Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista or check Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando for your dates.
