Helios Grand vs Portofino Bay is a choice between Universal Orlando’s newest hotel and its most established one, and the two sell very different things. Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel, opened in April 2025 inside Universal Epic Universe with its own entrance into the park. Loews Portofino Bay Hotel sits on the original campus, a water-taxi ride from Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and is one of only three Universal hotels that include free Universal Express Unlimited.

Both are Loews-run Signature Collection hotels with the same overnight parking charge, the same 12.5% room tax and no resort fee in their published charges. What separates them is which parks fill your days, how much floor space you need, and whether an Italian harbor or a rooftop bar above a theme park is your kind of evening.

Fees and perks below come from Loews’ and Universal’s official pages checked in October 2026; confirm them when you book. Our Universal Helios Grand Hotel guide and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel review go room by room on each.

Quick answer: Book Helios Grand if Epic Universe is the heart of your trip: you walk into Celestial Park from the hotel (park ticket required), two-queen rooms come with a Theme Park View option, and a midday break takes minutes instead of a bus ride. Book Portofino Bay if you will spend two or more days at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, because its free Express Unlimited covers everyone in the room at those two parks, its standard rooms are 450 square feet against 325 at Helios, and it has three pools instead of one. Neither perk crosses over: Portofino’s Express does not work at Epic Universe, and Helios Grand does not include Express at all.

Universal Helios Grand Hotel

Universal Helios Grand Hotel, a Loews Hotel, stands at the end of Celestial Park, the hub of Epic Universe, with 500 rooms including 35 suites. Loews lists a dedicated hotel entrance into Celestial Park (Epic Universe ticket required), a rooftop bar and a Mediterranean theme of constellations, domes and gardens. Universal’s hotel-benefits page places it in its top $$$$ price band, and TouringPlans ranks it fourth of the five Signature Collection hotels (October 2026).

What it does not have is free Express.

Six views from the hotel’s own photo gallery: the facade on Celestial Park, a two-queen room, an accessible bathroom, the lobby, the pool and Flora Taverna. Tap any photo to enlarge it, or see the full gallery and current rates on Booking.com.

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel recreates the Italian seaside village of Portofino around a man-made bay on Universal’s original campus, with 750 rooms including 45 suites, three pools and, depending on which Loews page you read, eight or nine restaurants and lounges. It opened in 1999, according to Orlando Informer, TouringPlans ranks it first of the five Signature Collection hotels, and at 450 square feet its renovated standard rooms are the largest at any Universal hotel.

The headline perk is free Universal Express Unlimited at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure for every registered guest, plus Priority Seating at select restaurants. The price of the harbor setting is the longest walk to the gates of the three Express hotels, which the water taxi largely solves.

Express Unlimited, Early Park Admission and the perks that differ

This is the biggest practical gap. Loews’ and Universal’s pages say it plainly: free Universal Express Unlimited comes only with Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort. Helios Grand, despite its Signature Collection status and top price band, does not include it. Our Hard Rock vs Royal Pacific vs Portofino Bay comparison weighs the three Express hotels against each other.

  • Where Portofino’s Express works: participating rides at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure during normal park hours, for everyone in the room, from key issue until the parks close on check-out day. It is not valid at Epic Universe, Volcano Bay or separately ticketed events, and at last check Universal’s terms also excluded Hagrid’s and Pteranodon Flyers. Park tickets are separate.
  • What it is worth: Loews bases its value claim on the average price of a 2-Park Express Unlimited pass, which its Portofino page puts at $129.99 to $389.99 per person ($124.99 to $389.99 on its benefits page). Our guide to Universal hotels with Express Pass runs the numbers for a family.
  • Express at Epic Universe: Universal’s Express page sells Express Unlimited only for the two original parks; at Epic, guests of either hotel can buy the single-use Universal Express pass or watch for Express Now offers in the app (see our Epic Universe guide).
  • Early Park Admission: both hotels get it, up to an hour before opening at select attractions. From October 5 to November 30, 2026, Universal’s calendar lists Islands of Adventure and four Epic Universe lands, with no upcoming dates at Universal Studios Florida; see our Universal Early Park Admission guide.
  • Shared perks: room-key charging and free delivery of purchases from select park shops; Priority Seating is for the three Express hotels only.
  • Booking.com guests: mobile check-in in the Universal app needs a direct Loews or Universal booking, so you collect physical key cards at the front desk; at Portofino the key card is your Express pass.

Getting to the parks: walk-in gate vs water taxi

Helios Grand’s advantage is Epic Universe. Loews lists a dedicated hotel entrance into Celestial Park that requires an Epic Universe ticket, and Universal’s hotel transportation post (August 2025) says Helios guests simply walk into the park. Neither publishes the entrance’s hours, so plan around park hours and ask at check-in.

For Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and CityWalk, Helios guests ride a free shuttle bus to the CityWalk hub. Universal’s hotel FAQ lists it every 15 minutes, its transportation post every 10, with rides of about 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. There is no walking path or water taxi from Helios, and no bus to Epic, because you walk.

Portofino Bay reverses the picture. Water taxis run from the Harbor Piazza to CityWalk; Universal says the ride averages under 10 minutes, boats and buses arrive about every 30 minutes, and transportation starts an hour before Early Park Admission. The walking path is about 0.8 mile to Universal Studios Florida and 1.1 to 1.2 miles to Islands of Adventure on our OpenStreetMap foot routes (TouringPlans estimates 16 and 19 minutes). Epic Universe is a free shuttle ride of about 5 miles; Loews says the water taxi does not go there.

Volcano Bay has a maintenance closure from October 26, 2026, with reopening planned on or before April 1, 2027, so the Volcano Bay bus from either hotel is of no use until it reopens. Neither hotel runs a Disney shuttle.

Rooms and occupancy

Space is Portofino Bay’s clearest win, as the table shows. Both hotels sleep five in a two-queen room only with a rollaway ($35 a day plus 12.5% tax, one per room, first come, first served) and three in a king room, also with a rollaway.

Views are Helios Grand’s answer: two-queen rooms come in Standard, Pool, Skyline or Theme Park View, and king, Deluxe, Club and Kids’ Suite rooms also come in Theme Park View versions. Portofino sells Garden View and Bay View rooms; TouringPlans says its few balcony rooms cannot be reserved ahead, only requested at check-in for a fee. Helios’ Deluxe 2 Queen is the only standard-category room at either hotel with a real fifth bed, a small sleeper sofa; Portofino’s Despicable Me kids’ room, Universal says, opens only into the parents’ room.

Extra adults are where the official pages disagree at Helios: Universal’s Helios page lists $25 plus tax per adult beyond two, Loews’ Helios page lists $55, so confirm the amount when you book. Both pages give $55 plus tax at Portofino Bay. Pack ‘n Plays are free at both, and microwaves cost $15 a day plus tax on request, per Universal’s hotel pages. Club Level at both includes a private lounge with continental breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres and personal concierge service, in 490-square-foot rooms at Portofino and 325-square-foot rooms at Helios.

Pools: one zero-entry pool or three themed ones

Helios Grand has one pool: an 8,660-square-foot zero-entry pool with underwater speakers, a hot tub, a terraced deck, a fire pit, 18 rentable cabanas and the Lotus Lagoon pool bar, with poolside movies when weather permits. Loews lists no waterslide or splash area, and Universal’s hotel FAQ reserves the pool for Helios Grand guests. A game room and free fitness center complete the list; no spa is listed.

Portofino Bay has three. The family Beach Pool has a Roman aqueduct-themed waterslide, a sandy beach, a children’s pool, two hot tubs and three cabanas; the quieter Villa Pool offers cabana rentals and upgraded loungers, with bocce courts nearby; and the Hillside Pool on the east wing is the one Loews describes as more private. Neither Loews nor Universal calls any of them adults-only, and Universal’s FAQ lets Portofino guests use the pools at the five other hotels in its main-campus pool group, something Helios guests cannot do.

Portofino adds poolside activities, a game room near the Beach Pool, a free fitness center for guests 18 and over, and Loews’ lending program of games and childproofing kits. News reports say its Mandara Spa closed on November 30, 2024, and Loews no longer lists a spa among its amenities.

Dining, bars and breakfast

Neither includes breakfast in standard rates; Club Level is the workaround at both.

  • Helios Grand: Flora Taverna (three meals with a full breakfast buffet, Mediterranean comfort food, a pizza oven and a gyro station, plus a lobby bar), Bar Helios (rooftop lounge with sliders, tapas, gyros and views over Epic Universe), Aurora Market (coffee bar and grab-and-go paninis, wraps and gelato), Lotus Lagoon (pool bar and grill) and room service. With park admission, Epic Universe’s restaurants are a short walk away during park hours.
  • Portofino Bay: Bice Ristorante (Northern Italian with bay views), Mama Della’s (family-style dishes from Tuscany, Naples and Piedmont with strolling musicians), Trattoria del Porto (casual; breakfast and dinner per Loews, breakfast through dinner per Universal), Sal’s Market Deli, Splendido Bar and Grill, The Thirsty Fish, the Gelateria, Caffe Espresso (pastries and breakfast sandwiches) and 24-hour room service.

Evenings tilt toward Portofino: Musica della Notte brings opera and “popera” to the Harbor Piazza at sunset every night, weather permitting, and quarterly Harbor Nights add ticketed wine and jazz. Helios answers with Bar Helios’ terrace above the park.

Parking, fees and policies

  • Resort fee: none in Loews’ or Universal’s published charges at either hotel; rooms carry 12.5% tax (6% lodging tax plus 6.5% sales tax, per Loews).
  • Overnight parking: $36 self or $45 valet per vehicle per night, plus tax, at both.
  • Day parking: Helios Grand charges day visitors $125 self or $128 valet plus tax, so it is no back door to Epic’s lot; Portofino charges $53 self (free under 30 minutes) or $56 valet plus tax.
  • Extra guests: rollaway $35 plus 12.5% tax, one per room, at both; extra adult $55 plus tax at Portofino, $25 (Universal) or $55 (Loews) at Helios.
  • Pets: Portofino takes up to two cats or dogs for $150 per stay in non-Club rooms, and dogs stay out of the pools, lounges and restaurants. Helios Grand does not permit pets.
  • Check-in and age: 4 pm in and 11 am out at both; the booking guest must be 21. Booking.com rates follow their own cancellation terms. Wi-Fi is free at both.

Price and vibe

Rates vary by season, availability and how far ahead you book. Universal’s hotel benefits page puts both in its top $$$$ price band, so compare the same nights at both. If free Express is the point but Portofino’s rate is not, our Sapphire Falls vs Royal Pacific comparison looks at Royal Pacific, which TouringPlans calls the least expensive of Universal’s top hotels, and its no-Express neighbor.

The feel is the real divider: Helios is new and polished, with park views and a rooftop bar; Portofino is a village of cobbled piazzas, boats and opera at sunset. For suites and kitchens near the new park at lower rates, see our guide to hotels near Epic Universe.

Choose Helios Grand if…

  • Epic Universe is the main event: two or more days there, with midday breaks and evening returns through the hotel’s own entrance.
  • A park view matters: book a Theme Park View room; other categories look over the pool or the skyline.
  • You want the newest hotel on property and a rooftop bar over the park.
  • Your party is two to four people, or five in a Deluxe 2 Queen room or the How to Train Your Dragon suite.

Choose Portofino Bay if…

  • Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure fill most of your days, so free Express Unlimited for the whole room pays for itself.
  • Space counts: 450-square-foot standard rooms, 490-square-foot Deluxe and Club rooms, and suites for up to 17.
  • Kids want a waterslide, a sandy beach and the option of pool-hopping to other main-campus hotels.
  • Evenings at the hotel matter, with Italian restaurants and music on the harbor at sunset.

Frequently asked questions

Does Universal Helios Grand Hotel include Express Pass?

No. Loews’ and Universal’s pages limit free Universal Express Unlimited to Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort, and only at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Helios Grand guests get Early Park Admission, the dedicated Epic Universe entrance and room-key charging. At Epic Universe you can buy a single-use Universal Express pass, since Express Unlimited is not sold there.

Is Helios Grand or Portofino Bay better for Epic Universe?

Helios Grand, clearly. It stands inside the park at the end of Celestial Park, and guests with a valid Epic Universe ticket enter through the hotel’s dedicated entrance, so pool breaks and naps take minutes. Portofino Bay reaches Epic only by free shuttle bus, about 5 miles each way, and its Express Unlimited perk is not valid there.

How far apart are Helios Grand and Portofino Bay?

About 3.6 miles by road on our OpenStreetMap route, via Kirkman Road and Vineland Road. Helios Grand sits inside Epic Universe, south of the original campus; Portofino Bay sits on the north side of that campus. Helios guests reach Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure by free bus to the CityWalk hub, about 3 miles away by road.

Which is better for families, Helios Grand or Portofino Bay?

Portofino Bay for pool time and space: 450-square-foot rooms, a Beach Pool with a slide, sandy beach and children’s pool, a Despicable Me kids’ suite and pool-hopping to other hotels. Helios Grand for Epic Universe days with young children, thanks to the walk-in entrance, a How to Train Your Dragon suite with a sleeper sofa and a Deluxe room that sleeps five without a rollaway.

Does Portofino Bay’s free Express work at Epic Universe?

No. Loews’ terms and Universal’s Express page restrict the hotel’s Express Unlimited to participating rides at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure during normal hours; it is not valid at Epic Universe, Volcano Bay or separately ticketed events. For Epic, both hotels’ guests can buy the single-use Universal Express pass or check Express Now offers in the app on the day.

Bottom line

Helios Grand vs Portofino Bay is really Epic Universe vs the original parks. Helios Grand sells proximity and views: you sleep inside the new park and walk in, but pay Signature Collection rates for 325-square-foot rooms without Express. Portofino Bay sells the perk and the space: free Express Unlimited at the two original parks, 450-square-foot rooms, three pools and a harbor, with Epic a bus ride away.
